A huge issue right now is where we get the money from, or rather, what are we willing to sacrifice? Personally, I feel that we spend way too much in defense. The next wars are going to be economic and we need to be able to fight them better. Cuts in defense can be allocated to education, R&D, etc. We do not want to build a cheaper shoe but want to be so far ahead of other countries in areas like biosciences, robotics, etc that it will take others many years to catch up. Good jobs will follow as opposed to more dividends for Halliburton shareholders. 30 years ago we exported many items others could not build - and we need to do the same by building better "industries of the future" and this will exploit our nation's ingenuity. No one is saying defense is not important - just that we have gone crazy with the spending in that sector; life is all about balance.
Without the war expenditures DoD cost are a pretty moderate part of the budget. It is highly visible, and a lot of folks resent it, so it gets a lot of attention.
However, the real problem is Medicare, and what will be done to lower projected costs. I suppose you can just let older folks drop dead, but the next Thanksgiving meal discussions with mom and dad may become unpleasant.
Anyone talking about deregulation is talking about free market. Nothing about a GSE is free market other than where it was traded and who traded it and in fact allowing a Government Sponsored Entity to be traded on the free market gives the implicit notion that hey this things super secure and guaranteed. Enter lobbyist $170 million and the implication that stopping these corrupt loans was racist and there goes the neighborhood.
Sorry, but someone who talks like, "uhmmm, er, uh, mmm" without a tele-prompter, screws up his Oath of Office, hires a tax-cheater on his staff, hangs out with people like Rezko and Ayers and has clearly stated he doesn't know anything about the stock market is NOT qualified to help the middle class. The middle class is in deep trouble. The MSM pushed this inexperienced guy on us.

You forgot to mention Rev. Wright...
Chill out. Obama being in office is a fact. Lets see what happens next. I am not a great Obama fan, but still curious about how he is going to fix things.
Well if this guy keeps screwing up like he has been for the past 48 hours then its pretty obvious the middle class is in serious trouble. You realize he's looking into wiping out the F-22 Raptor contract. Unbelievable. Thousands of jobs lost. And then we lose our most treasured weapon.

You are definitely part of the problem. Keep seeking the truth, you got a long ways to go.
What? You think wiping out thousands of jobs associated with the F-22 Raptor is good for American families? (By the way, you do realize he plans on taxing your 401k and delivering selective social security benefits don't you.) People just didn't read between the lines when they signed the contract on this guy.

We spend far far more on defense when compared to other countries so there is a reason to cut there and avoid a stiff grampa at the Thanksgiving table. There is simply no one who can compete militarily against us. A cut of few percent points there is a big deal. It also depends on how you dice and slice the pie ( http://www.warresisters.org/pages/piechart.htm ).
However we get the dough, one of the key efforts should be to invest in industries that have a future.
