Whenever a politican speaks about "American Values", it almost always is about envoking an image of the Larry the Cable Guy show. McCain basically said everywhere outside the Confederacy was "UnAmerican".
I consider myself an American before anything else. But maybe America would be good to recognize the incrediable diversity and ingeniuity of it's people. Alot of kids I talk to from Europe have this boring image of America and are shocked when I tell them all of the different and interesting subcultures to be found here. Why does American society glorify strip malls and Wal-Mart when we have so much more to offer?
LOL ! Its so true. Why do you think the world believes americans are the dumbest people in the developed world? They truly do. I don't know how much you travel, but this is a general opinion wherever you go: the impression to not waste time having any sensible conversation with americans because their intellect is so weak. It is caused by these images created by media and politics to portray the "genuine american" only as one type of person.
I also think U.S. television is awful. There need to be more 'neutral' programs for people and not what Paris Hilton is wearing or who she laid underneath of last week...
What great information from all over the world can be had on British TV! If you don't like British TV, you can watch american TV, arabian TV, French, Italian, Irish - you name it. I grew to love British TV and find the one here so infantile, boring and narrow. Besides, over half of TV shows and programs are borrowed ideas from abroad and then recycled into an american version of it, often a worse version.
British TV is full of humor in particular. It doesn't contain only perfect people who are young with perfect breast implants... It contains young and old, wacky and sane, hilarious and serious. There is a constant stream of debates, documentaries, information, and neutral information which is not colored by political biases and so on. And every single parlimentary session can be viewed live, so you actually know what they have said and discussed if you're interested. It actually makes great entertainment and if you think free speech exist here, watch them go about!

Everytime someone here talks about "Values" or "Patriotism", they always seem to remind us that Immigrants, The Rich/Wall St, The poor, Jews, Muslims, Blacks, Catholics, Artisis, Gays, Intellectuals, Surfer dudes/dudettes, Counter-cultural, etc...don't envoke "Real American values". How the "Real America" is some country farm with blonde people and main streets, not those filthy big cities with their "Diversty" and cultural amenities. Or how a NY housing project is a "Ghetto" but a trailer park is "God's Country".

sometimes subcultures are groups suffering from a lack of values.
the south has provided our soldiers and many of our police.
they got the guts the traditions the family and religion.
most strong people of the world embrace these qualities.

I wasn't pointing out Britain as anything superior, although they have way higher regard everywhere than the U.S. has. I was pointing to how television can help to bring better information to people to broaden their mind a bit.

Yep, themz evil white men are all sitting around all day every day for the last 200 or so years thinking "How can we s*** on the Brown folks". Could the answer to your question possibly be that white people are not a monolithic group and a rich NYC WASP billionaire isn't going to give two scoops about poor scots-irish in Alabama?
