He went on to say:
"I no longer need to run as a Presidential Candidate for the Socialist Party. The Democrat Party has adopted our platform."
It was Norman Thomas in 1944 of course. But He was wrong. A portion of Americans would knowingly adopt socialism.
The first liberal state was the United States of America[14], founded on the principle that "all men are created equal; that they are endowed by their creator with certain unalienable rights; that among these are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness; that to insure these rights, governments are instituted among men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed."[15] This said, much of early liberal thought originated in and influenced the politics of The Netherlands, the United Kingdom and France.
Norman Thomas did not say anything of the sort, you goofball. He did, when asked whether FDR had carried out the Socialist program, say, "Not unless [he] carried it out on a stretcher." (Source: Swanberg, W.A., Norman Thomas: The Last Idealist (New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1976), p. 204)
Incidentally, Thomas did run for President again in 1944, and again in 1948.
