I would support his actions if we had a draft. Because we don't, he joined the military of his own volition, so, yes, he should be sued by his employer for breach of contract. Another good reason to stay out of the military.

I think all those thinking of enlisting or those recruiters should be forced to watch (for the would-be enlistees) or forced to show to would-be enlistees (for recruiters) a film or something showing the ugly sides of war - not films like Black Hawk Down or any of those glorifying war. Hmm...i like the videoclip of Metallica's song One showing the limbless soldier, don't know from which movie.

I agree- or at least some real footage of what combat is like.
It's a sad comment that people joining the military see it as some kind of commerical with cute people climbing mountains or watching a computer while dreaming of college money! Now, who put those ideas in their heads???
Every time I read some of the posts o here from people who were never in the military and are so ignorant it is slap in the face obvious in their posts, I think of A few Good Men.

Son, we live in a world that has walls and those walls need to be guarded by men with guns. Who's gonna do it? You? You, Lieutenant Weinberg? I have a greater responsibility than you can possibly fathom.

We use words like honor, code, loyalty. We use then as the backbone of a life trying to defend something. You use them as a punchline. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the blanket of the very freedom I provide and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather you just said "thank you," and went on your way. Otherwise, I suggest that you pick up a weapon and stand a post.
He's braver than alot of people who didnt have the guts to walk away from something they knew was morally bankrupt. He's a brave man and I admire his toughness and I hope that his record is a testament to his courage

Yea, its pretty prose, but meaningless when the cause is not just. Thats the rub. Personal courage and conviction applies, but the mission is flawed at its very core. So all that nice and poetic prose provided by Hollywood is just as believable as Jack Nicholson being a Marine. It's Iraq, which is as immoral as Vietnam was before it.
Sounds like an easy statement for a coward to hide behind. I think it's much more likely that he didn't have the guts to put his life on the line to protect innocents. Yet he still wanted to collect the paycheck.
If he wanted to collect his paycheck he would have deployed to Iraq.
Too many didn't join the military to actaully be soldiers it seems. Nothing different from the vietnam war ;their were people then that refused to serve even as medics which tells you they basically did want to serve.
