This thread revives some very unpleasant memories. Like the names George Wallace, Orville Faubus, Lester Maddux and Ross Barnett. What did these men have in common? They were governors of southern states who tried to prevent black students from enrolling in state universities, and they were also Democrats.
I actually hope it details the things Union soldiers did in the south following the end of the civil war. Many of these things aren't taught in the history books. When Union soldiers arrived in south Louisiana and found a population that spoke only French (Cajun) they thought this could lead to more rebellion so after they took over the local government, they brought in school teachers from up north and told them to get the kids to speak English at all cost. This led to some students severely beaten (sometimes with a bullwhip) for speaking French in class (the only language they knew at the time). This resulted in parents taking their children out of school and a dumbing down of a whole generation. Those who stayed in school were so scared emotionally from the experience that it led to the near disappearance of the Cajun French language. My grandparents spoke it fluently. My parents a little less so. I only learned a few words and phrases. There's been a growing attempt started well after WW2 to begin teaching the language to the young again.
Oh, and if the union soldiers were so intent on freeing the slaves then why were the slaves the main focus for their rape?
During the early part of the 20th century, attempts were made to suppress Cajun culture by measures such as forbidding the use of the Cajun French language in schools. After the Compulsory Education Act forced Cajun children to attend formal schools, American teachers threatened, punished, and often beat their Cajun students in an attempt to force them to use English (a language many of them had not been exposed to before). During World War II, Cajuns often served as French interpreters for American forces in France; this helped to overcome prejudice Cajun - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
ATLANTA - A panel of Georgia lawmakers signed off Thursday on a plan to create a Confederate heritage month, even as legislative leaders reacted coolly to a push to apologize for the state's role in slavery.
Sen. Jeff Mullis' bill would dub April as Confederate History and Heritage Month to honor the memory of the Confederacy and "all those millions of its citizens of various races and ethnic groups and religions who contributed in sundry and myriad ways to the cause of Southern Independence."
What a horribly misguided bill that only a Republican could come up with. Georgia will be boycotted big time if this idiocy goes through & I know the people of Atlanta will put a stop to any suggestion of a "Confederate month." What an embarrassment to the South!
The North was no less racist than the south. In fact, Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation that freed the slaves only applied to confederate states, not union states. Newly freed black slaves weren't welcomed in the north like they thought they would be. In fact, some of the southern slave owner farmers were black. Personally, I'd like to see Cajun history included in American History class. Should also include Spanish American history since Louisiana/New Orleans were run by Spain. The New Orleans French Quarter is actually Spanish in origin and design.
The problem I see with this Confederate history month is that this makes it seem as if the Confederacy was right and they fought the Civil War for some noble reasons. Basically during this month isn't it going to have to be taught that the Confederates were wrong on slavery and wrong for breaking from the union? So what's to celebrate exactly?
