I've said this before - a government can not create self-sustaining jobs. It's impossible. It's like creating an egg without the chicken.
Infrastructure jobs will be temporary - states hire contractors for building projects, roads, bridges. Jobs end when the project ends.
Government jobs, well, those never go away unfortunetly. If what Obama said is true with 3 million extra jobs with "90% being in the private sector" (somehow changed from his "75% will be in the private sector" a month ago) then that means 300,000 more government beaurocrats doing who knows what.
We have to hope Obama's stimulus plans will stimulate the economy so that private enterprise will create jobs and if it works (personally doubtful) then those will create permanent jobs.
Couldn't put it any better than that, get your shovel ready and save your money.
The idea of economic stimulus is to stimulate the economy. When job creation is a part of it, the idea is to have more people that earn a living and as a result, spend, to help market grow. When that happens, demand for goods/services goes up, businesses thrive and they start to hire. It is a cyclic process.
From your post, it seems you're also focusing on a limited view of jobs, like road and bridge construction, when in effect, this package address a wide range of jobs, from scientific research, education, engineering, medicine, arts...
Yeah, I was basically thinking of the jobs I hear about the most: infrastructure and green collar jobs. I think "green collar" jobs will be more lasting though. We'll always need those who can install and maintains solar panels, wind turbines, weatherize homes, etc.
