I don't think of it an an entitlement, I think of it as compassion. As with education, you would still have a right to pay for and pursue private health care in addition, or in place of, the univerally funded system.
You can call it what you choose, but when the taxpayer picks up the tab for those who don't pay taxes, that's called "entitlements".
Now, if the government wants to create a system of health care that is equal to all, then all must pay. You can not exclude one segment of society at the expense of another. So to tax the wealthy to provide for the poor is not equal, that's called socialism.

The "tax payers" pick up the tab for all that emergency room health care and medical debt that goes uncollected from those that don't have enough medical insurance in the form of higher premiums.............So what's your point?
I would throw a party!!!
But seriously.. I think income tax / employer contribution would be a good way to fund it. Our taxes may be higher, but as it is now as employees we contribute to our health plan.
It really doesn't matter how it's funded as long as "all people" pay into the system. No opt outs.
The savings would be enormous. France is considered to have the best health care system in the World and they are able to provide the service to all their citizens for less than 2/3 what Americans pay to cover only some.
What an elitest statement. What do you base your belief on?
Considering I'm 24 and worked 315 days last year and paid nearly 76k in taxes last year I guess am an elite. Hardly... So I base my opinions on the fact that I know I pay an unfair share into a system I will never benefit from. I don't want to help pay for YOU, your kids, or anyone else. If you could save your money and live within your means you too could survive. I live well UNDER what I could “afford” based on my income and credit rating. It’s pathetic to think that people want to be cared for by others. I do, however, understand that people fall on bad times. My sister is having a hard time herself. Her husband works for BNSF and he keeps getting bumped off jobs and they could barely afford gas to get their three kids to school let alone keep them fed the past few months. They are fortunate enough though to have family (my father and I) who will help them until the tough times pass. They will do the same for me should I ever get in a bind. I don’t need or want the government to help me. I don’t need them or want them to do anything other than protect me from foreign attacks. That’s about it. The states can take care of infrastructure issues. Hence the property taxes, schools taxes (despite their lopsided rating), gas taxes, sales taxes, etc.
That’s all off subject though. The point is, healthcare is a luxury. How can you FORCE doctors to do procedures? How will they be paid? Salary? Again, WHY would a doctor stay in an industry where they are government regulated? Supply and demand drives everything in our system. Just like fear and greed drive the stock market. The demand for specialized healthcare is high therefore people have to pay more. If somebody wasn’t paying it they COULD NOT CHARGE the prices they do. Also lawsuits put a hell of a strain on the medical system as well, but that’s a whole other angle in its self. Point is this, I do a job that not many people are willing to do, I have to be away from home all the time, and the hours are long. If I didn’t get paid what I do I WOULD NOT BE HERE. I would go flip burgers if it paid the same. Now I ask you why would doctors not do the same thing. Being a doctor is not easy. It’s not easy to become one either. Why would people wish to invest all their time and effort in the school, next go to work, and then risk of medical malpractice suits for a limited amount of gain? A government limited amount of gain. It doesn’t make business sense! How are you going to convince educated people, like doctors, to make stupid business decisions? I damn sure wouldn’t want the ones that they can convince working on me.

You don't know how much it would cost and you don't know how much it would save assuming it saved at all.
What will you do when people stop wanting to be doctors because they can't make the money they think they deserve?

I know how much other Western countries provide the service for.
And the answer to the Doctor problem is to have more doctors....Their numbers are severly limited now by too restricting barriers to entry into the profession.
