You might want to actually read the article you post-"While voters are not happy with the process, they do approve 45 - 33 percent, with 22 percent undecided, of Paterson's selection of Kirsten Gillibrand as U.S. Senator. Even Republicans approve 42 - 33 percent. " What do you know, consensus!
The gist of the article seems to focus on the fact that voters didn't like process. I take it that they were frustrated that someone like Carolyn Kennedy, with absolutely no experience, was the prime contender as long as she was. IMO that's a good thing, the electorate is actually paying some degree of attention to qualifications and ability, even if the ruling elite wasn't.
I was about to point that out too. By the way, New York is not New England.
