I actually googled the question 'isn't there any good news out there' this morning. I can't take it anymore. The gloom and doom has reached epidemic proportions and this is no way to run an airline (or a country either).
I continue to be optimistic while all around are predicting the downfall of America as we know it. This is a great country and we will get through this as we have gotten through bad times before.
In the meantime, the good news is the sun rises everyday here in Palm Beach County and I can feel the warm sun on my skin, my puppy bounces down the pavement on our walks and squeals with glee when a neighbor comes out with a treat. We have food on the table and September on Cape Cod in our sites.
We have lost half our savings we depended on for our future, but I sit here now typing on my laptop with my desktop in another room. We may not eat out as much or as well, or travel the way we had hoped or buy everything material thing we set our hearts on. But we are healthy and I refuse to give up my optimism for the future.
Yep we will survive, this country won't end BUT what will it look like when we get done "surviving"?
It could very well look like it did in the late 1800's which is something to think and prepare for just like you would for any disaster.
Dumped my house last year when the Raleigh market began to tank (sales at least, prices to follow), gold is up, my mining stocks are up 50% or more this year, and just got some cheap Canadian Royalty Trusts paying 30%+ dividends just as oil is about to take off.
Life is good.
Do you ever think of all those losing their homes in record numbers when you reflect on your personal good fortune? Here is what it's come to:

The snow's pretty up here, but South Florida sounds fantastic! That was an excellent post, Molly. I wish you and your dog have a great day being optimistic in Palm Beach
I have a roof over my head, like 99.5% of all Americans.
I am free to dissent the policy of my govt. without fear of persecution.
My 401(k) has sunk by half, yet I still have more than the 90% of the world who just gets by.
Average annual wage in China: $3600
Average annual wage in India: $1600
Average annual wage in Kenya: $600
Slavery is currently illegal, unlike many countries who still enslave their own citizens.
I am free. I have choices in America that billions of people around the world do not.
If I were involved in an auto accident, I would receive some of the best trauma care in the world, regardless of my insurance status, in about seven minutes on average. In many countries, accident victims are left crippled or dead on the road until their family comes to pick them up.
I was raised by modest parents in a modest neighborhood and managed to do quite well by world standards. In many countries, one's position in life is determined at birth. The Indian Caste system, for example.
My children have two parents who love them. We have raised them to be responsible young adults. They are excelling in school.
Good news - winter is almost over.
Good news - adults are in the White House
Good news - we may start repairing our roads etc
Good news - Americans realize big government idealogy is causing this mess.
Good news - Winter was on of the coldest and the planet is cooling Al Gore might be unemployeed.
Good news - we were repairing roads unfortantly they will all in the middle east.
So far 3 out of 120 or so have started looking for homes since Feb 1st. I got a few credit request from some mortgage brokers. The cockroaches are scattering now that the 1 googol candle spotlight is on wall street, Washington, bankers and the Swiss...
Uh...yeah, I reflect...that's why I give gift cards to the homeless I meet on the streets and volunteer for Habitat for Humanity As for people getting foreclosed or losing their life savings, there's no way to get that money back for them, so what can I possibly do?

Oh yeah and groceries are as cheap as ever....
Funny you mention that. I noticed milk (1 gallon) was 2 for 4 dollars at the grocery store. It was a nice deal, but I hope its not an indicator of deflation.
