Or....It's part of an important part of American history, flown by men who were Americans before and after the war, and as far as the Union was concerned, were Americans during the war. As in the War to Preserve the Union. The right of secession wasn't recognized by the North, so as far as Lincoln was concerned, they were still Americans.
American traitors who took up arms against their country. Lincoln was lenient, perhaps too lenient
I agree. The North did not completely suppress/change the lawless hillbilly and worship the cavalier attitudes that still dominate the south. It did not do enough to reduce the racism and to get religion out of southern politics.
Yes and the ones who called themselves Confederates committed treason.
Treason - the offense of attempting by overt acts to overthrow the government of the state to which the offender owes allegiance or to kill or personally injure the sovereign or the sovereign's family
And they weren't trying to overthrow the government of the United States, only to secede from it. Just like the revolutionaries in the American Revolutionary War weren't trying to overthrow the English government, but instead were rejecting their authority.

No, Lincoln was trying to preserve the United States of America, a concept that evidently evades you. The South was trying to secede from what was then a much looser collection of political entities because they felt that the union no longer represented their interests. Lincoln perceived, IMO correctly, that once states began seceding, the trend would continue until a United States no longer existed. Moreover, with Canada a British holding on the North and Mexico being colonized by Spain and France alternatively, he had legitimate concerns of aggression on those fronts. He believed strongly that BOTH the North and the South needed to continue forward together to profit economically and to fulfill the promise to the people of the world that a nation founded on Democratic principles could not only survive but thrive.
The South had ample reason to believe that their interests were being ignored. A President had just been elected who hadn't even appeared on their election ballots. It's one thing to have a vote and to lose, it's another to be disenfranchised entirely. The fact that someone could be elected national leader who didn't even appear on the ballot for half the country, that's disenfranchisement. So, following the propositions laid out in the Declaration of Independence, the South took the option to secede. And for the record, the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, Chief Justice Taney, was firmly of the opinion that they had the right to do so. He was opposed to the action, but acceded that Constitutionally they had a right to do so. Exercising your rights generally is not considered treason.

Thanks, what a lovely remark to make about an entire region of your country.

You need to learn something about southern political history. The Democrats suppressed the hillbillies right along side blacks with Jim Crow. Also, back then, religion had little part to play in Democrat southern politics.
