Buying the hybrids to save fuel/money is the intent. You should be delighted that the government is attempting to conserve your tax money.

Would you be happier if the government had a fleet of Hummers?
The UAW is actually the reason they can't build as cheaply as toyota. The American quality is back and I'm the very proud owner of a new Dodge, but for them to compete again, the UAW has to start caring a little more about their industry and a little less about their pensions (which won't exist if the big 3 fail).

Please - re-read my original post. I noted clothing.

As for cars - why not focus also on American Companies that manufactuer automobiles.

I again on the other issues as well.

Buy American

I haven't seen any government cars that are Prius's, but then what similar sized American car will get ~50MPG?

Probably because they are businesses making money for the players and others involved.

Then doesn't it make more sense to support American companies that have good management? So at least the money would be more effectively used.

Zippo lighters are made here and have a free lifetime repair warranty. Solid U.S. quality. That's a company that should be making our cars, appliances... everything!

I agree. It's nice to say only buy American vehicles but American consumers want efficient vehicles with good gas mileage. If American car manufacturers are not meeting this demand, then we will buy foreign.

So are we the land of vices? Cigarette lighters, cigarettes and booze are all American items.

Good going
Cars aren't cheap so Americans have the right to demand quality. If the American car makers are not producing reliable vehicles that offer good mileage, then we have the right to purchase a foreign car. Yeah, the profits do go towards the foreign company but they are providing jobs for Americans in their US plants.
