Byrd: Obama in power grab - John Bresnahan - POLITICO.com

Quote:
Sen. Robert Byrd (D-W.Va.), the longest-serving Democratic senator, is criticizing President Obama’s appointment of White House “czars” to oversee federal policy, saying these executive positions amount to a power grab by the executive branch.

In a letter to Obama on Wednesday, Byrd complained about Obama’s decision to create White House offices on health reform, urban affairs policy, and energy and climate change. Byrd said such positions “can threaten the Constitutional system of checks and balances. At the worst, White House staff have taken direction and control of programmatic areas that are the statutory responsibility of Senate-confirmed officials.”

“As presidential assistants and advisers, these White House staffers are not accountable for their actions to the Congress, to cabinet officials, and to virtually anyone but the president,” Byrd wrote. “They rarely testify before congressional committees, and often shield the information and decision-making process behind the assertion of executive privilege. In too many instances, White House staff have been allowed to inhibit openness and transparency, and reduce accountability.”
Geez. What a power trip he is on. Remember when the Left raged against Rove as an advisor in the WH? This is along the same lines, but much, much worse, imho.

Is anyone surprised that a politician coming from one of the most corrupt, one-party systems in the country (Chicago) would try something like this?

Just want to make things clear to the thread starter.

1) This is no suprise to most liberals. Obama is weak on civil liberties, the rule of law, and he doesn't seem inclined to limit much of Bush's outrageous Presidential claims.
Idahogie, MV, and myself just for starters have initiated threads criticizing him for this.

2) That being said..Obama is a much better improvement in these areas than Bush/Cheney were.

3) The only ally Libertarians/Ron Paul voters have in this Country in regards to civil liberites and upholding the Constitution are a minority of Liberal Demcocrats.(imo 1/3 of them). On the other hand 99% of the GOP are sellouts and only selectively claim to want to preserve civil liberties when it gains them a poltical point ( Like the thread starter is trying to do here)

3) It par for the course that the thread starter is knocking Obama for this.....She loves authoritarians....she wants a Dictator in American to lead us...she's all for Presidential power grabs in the name of the WAR ON TERROR.........She's a fake conservative...She does not respect the Constitution and laws....she's perfectly fine with laws being broken....if it's her side doing it....for the right reasons of course...LOL

Really? Bush never, ever tried to usurp the cabinet members responsibilities by political hacks from the WH. Who will actually be running these departments? It appears no one of accountability/responsibility will be.

I would say obama does not respect the constitution if he is going ahead with this plan.

I would also say Sen Byrd, a constitutional scholar in his own right, has it exactly right.

Where are those threads, btw?

Obama's Cabinet are just figure heads, the czars will be the ones running the show. Some Dems are finally beginning to awake from their deep comas.
