You don't see anyone forcing illegals to learn English.
Actually, an English-Spanish dual immersion program would do just that. If anything, it would beneft kids who don't get at chance to speak English at home.

Not anymore, anyway and it didn't matter wheter one was illegal or not...but as an elementary student (1st grade) I got my mouth washed out with soap for saying something in Spanish (I'm fluent in both languages with English being my first language), friends of mine received the same "punishment' or got licks, or got sent to the prinicpals office ...
the bigoted administration could've at least administered 'time-out' instead of soap, or licks...
I don't know about Mandatory - but there were consequences if one was bilingual...
SMITHFIELD - Johnston County's first dual language immersion program will start this fall with a pilot English-Spanish program at Selma Elementary School.
The Johnston County school board approved the program Thursday.
The program would start with two kindergarten classes and add grades each successive year. About 20 Spanish-speaking students and 20 English-speaking students would participate in each grade level. Students would take half of their classes in English and half in Spanish.
School board members said they hoped it would be the first step to making foreign language accessible to all students in the county in the earlier grades.
"All studies indicate when you start early, children learn faster and retain [languages] longer," said board member Kay Carroll.
I applaud this initiative, the US is an increasingly bilingual country, and this will help many children to be competitive
Heaven forbid anybody learn a second language... And it just so happens that Spanish is probably the most logical second language for many Americans to learn.
I think spanish immersion classes are a great idea. I'd be first in line to sign my kids up. Learning Spanish will open their worlds up in ways that will benefit them socially and economically. They'll meet new friends, new business acquaintances when they're adults, more opportunities in general will open up to them.

After I started pre-school, my parents were advised that the family had to know english to achieve the American dream. My mom knew little and my father knew where the bathroom was. All I knew was tagalog (pronounced ta-ga-lug.... not tag-a-lug(irritating)). But I did learn english. Read alot of books. And went to UH for premed after 8 years in military service.
My view as a former immigrant is that you assimulate to the country you live in and live accordingly by their rules.
I lived in Japan for a year and knew Japanese with relative ease. I know how to find the bathroom in the subway system!!!!!
This is not the phillipines, this is USA, and both Spanish and English
are dominant languages.

I agree with that!
