Pot legalized only would only bring in a certain amount of tax revenue but would do little to free up jail overcrowding since very few are in for selling or using pot
800,000 citizens were arrested last year simply for possession of pot.
As the mother of a recovering addict, I say legalize and tax it. Use the tax money for treatment centers for those who wish to stop using. Many addicts want to quit but there are no affordable facilities available.

I wasn't even thinking about guns in the text of using them against drug dealers,I'm talking about giving the government a inch and then they trying to take a mile. They won't admit failure in their war on drugs but instead demand even more nonsense from the American people.
I will retract then and agree with you ON THE FACT that if you give the gooberment an inch, they will steal a mile. The left is as bad as the right and you will get NO argument out of me on that.
Do you believe it can be stopped or do you believe it should be legal?
We could but we choose not to.
Take for instance Pseudophenedrine, the main constituent in the epidemic drug Meth that is a current bane on society. There are only like 4-5 manufactures of this core ingredient in the world and if the US were to ban its importation, then there would be no more meth. However this is also a main ingredient in many nasal decongestants, and in fact it is our pharmaceutical industry that has lobbied to maintain the importation of this ingredient even though there are alternatives.
So the next time you know someone or are reading about some family of children becoming wards of the state to be paid for by tax payer dollars, just remember, part of that blame rest with your favorite pharmaceutical company for demanding of our government its continued use.
Lots of money to be made in the destruction of things, private prisons, etc...
IMO, the only reason all drugs aren't legal is because big pharma can't make $$ on it.
The population is already drugged on Prozac, Soma and the like.
What's the difference?
No, the pharmaceutical companies did make money off of cocaine, heroin, lsd, etc but they made it illegal because of the public outcry that it causes blacks to go crazy. I was shocked to find out that was the reason why hard drugs are illegal in this country but it's for no other reason then that.
Well it's a good thing the legal drugs behind the counter aren't being abused and causing massive problems in the US.
You'll get no argument from me that legal over the counter drugs cause massive problems.....but making them all illegal will NOT solve one inch of the problem and would make things 10 times worse.
Americans in general take way to many drugs, legal and illegal. We always seem to look for the solution to our problem in a pill bottle first rather than after trying other options. We want an instant fix for our pain or disorder rather than trying to find out what the root problem is and dealing with that.
Again though, if people want an instant fix in the form of a drug, they will find it wheather it's legal or not. Making it illegal just compounds the problem by diverting the police and courts to all these drug issues rather than dealing with truly dangerous people who are on the streets.
Do you believe it can be stopped or do you believe it should be legal?
Yes, it can be stopped. Put drug users in drug user prison with three year sentences. There are your shovel ready projects - build dedicated drug user prisons and improve the quality of society. We're wasting our time and resources going after dealers. Put users in prisons of just drug users. Rehab them there in a dedicated environment or just lock them up. Dry up the demand. Drug users impact law abiding folks more than dealers do. Drug dealers aren't knocking over little old ladies for their purses, breaking into the homes and cars of law abiding citizens and stealing everything that isn't nailed down, robbing banks and convenience stores, stealing from their employers or shoplifting and driving up prices, unless they are users, too. Drug dealers hurt other people in the drug culture. Users hurt the rest of us.
Want to get rid of prostitution? Put johns in prison, not hookers. Same reasoning. Dry up the demand.
You know, when people stopped using typewriters, typewriter makers found another business. Drug dealers will, too. And don't give me the alcohol argument. You don't point to drunks and say, if they can be stupid and dull-witted, why can't we?
We've done it the other way for years and it hasn't worked. We don't need more addle-brained people than the ones we already have.
