In this article by Steve Thomma of the McClatchy Newspapers, he points out that both sides favor bigger government, it's just who gets what, that seperates one side from the other.

Despite all the fighting, both parties favor big government (http://www.freep.com/article/20090308/NEWS15/903080388 - broken link) (alt link)

Democrats want a big government that addresses their priorities, not the Republicans' agenda. And the Republican's. Our agenda before your priorities.

No argument here, both are great articles and lots of truth to them. Thanks for the post. I would love to see someone try to refute it.

So when are the Ron Paulers, Libertarians, and true Conservatives going to get in through their heads that Amerians want big government.....not small government????

My guess is never....It's just to much of a shock for them to deal with...They'll just go on pretending their view is sooo popular with regular folk.

There is just too much money, to let someone else spend it. (even if it's pretend money)

If Ron Paul had accepted the Libertarian nomination for president than the Libertarians would have done much, much better. I don't think they would have won a state but they could have tipped the balance in some swing states. Instead, the Libertarians recruited Bob Barr just to have a "name" from mainstream politics, albeit one who didn't perfectly conform to libertarian principles, out of a belief he'd run a more professional campaign - yet Barr ran as incompetent of a campaign as any LP candidate and got no more votes than Badnarik or Browne. Maybe the Libertarians should try nominating a celebrity next time as the major parties sometimes do. How about Jimmie "JJ" Walker (a registered LP member) as Libertarian candidate in 2012?

Once you become a "political" party, you get sucked into the abyss of power and money. There is a cost to "principles", and principles is the first thing to fall when you want to win.

It doesn't matter what people want. People can't have big government, no matter how much they want it. At least, not for the foreseeable future.

The fiat currency dollar took less than 40 years to essentially crumble the economy.
