How much? I don't know. But, the technology is there - and for links / facts - check out the Southern Nevada Water Authority -

The state of Nevada, like its neighbor California, is undergoing a severe fiscal crisis. Who's going to pay for that water?

It's all a matter of economics. When the price of water gets too high, enough people will migrate to more hospitable locales to reduce the demand, thus the price, and a sustainable population will be left.

Salinization and Saline Environments

This link describes the problem with our water supply. Just because you see water, does not mean it is suitable. Also, desalinization of water is extremely expensive. That is why it is seldom done except in very wealthy countries such as Arabia.

C) So. Cal has been through this before. It is not all "doom and gloom" as you try to portray.

Yep - desalination has a cost.

But, it is an alternative to running out of water.

Wow. You really don't think on a global scale there's a shortage of potable drinking water? I would recommend you check out an environmental science book or two.

The only reason the Southwest isn't drying up because water flows to money. Infrastructures keep taking it from further and further places.

Thank God the Great Lakes governments in the U.S. and Canada signed a pact to ensure that the lakes - holding 95% of North America's surface freshwater -would not be pipelined to the Southwest.

They saw the writing on the wall on that one. Incredible how arrogant humans are to think they can live in the desert in the same way they live in New England.
