I don't know enough about the proposal to be for or against, however, if it would mean that veterans could get care near to where they live/are rather than having to travel long distances to the nearest VA center, wouldn't that be a good thing?
Currently many service people are not getting prompt or adequate care because they cannot be cared for by private doctors near to their homes.

I need much more information about how exactly this would work and what they would be asked to pay for before I make any judgement one way or the other.

Oh, and by the way, this is the third or fourth thread on this topic.

Tigerlily, of course the end result would be they could get treatment anywhere - because they would effectively be out of the VA system seeking treatment on their own dime.

Then when they max out their private insurance - their families are without coverage.

The plan has nothing to do with quality of care - it's all about who pays for it.

Personally, I think Obama should back off this real fast and say it was a complete misunderstanding.

This is the stupidest thing he could do.

I agree - he needs to get off of that idea in a hurry. This would be his first non-political ideological major blunder.

NO! ! ! It's pathetic that this is even an idea passed off as perverted humor.

The American Legion has about 2 million members. I'd hate to be answering the WhiteHouse phone these days.

VA Budget: Praise and a Warning

The money has to come from somewhere. If the premiums of veterans won't be raised, what's the problem? And how strange for veterans to be fighting on behalf of insurance companies--in this age of AIG.
Because that will drive up private insurance for everyone! If it's a service related injury treatment costs should be borne by the government, not shifted onto the premiums of everyone else.

What do you suppose would be the chances that someone with a service related injury could get private insurance that would cover the condition?

The primary purpose of the VA is to "care for he who has borne the battle, and his widow & orphans".

Not only the dumbest idea, but the most outrageous.
