One word: Nope

Both parties want big government. Democrats want big social spending and Republicans want big defense spending. I prefer defense spending so I'll support the Republicans.

Former Repub voter here, now I consider myself Indie. No, they have consistently let me down on EVERYTHING. I still believe in the basic principle of Liberal Locals and Conservative Federals but it would sure help if we could find a president who didn't mind sharing and could actually act like a conservative once in power.

Neither want small government. The Repubs and the Dems are one in the same now.
Puppets to the corporate and banking interests.

The republicans just want to cut back on education and health to save money. And to eliminate any assistance to those who need it. 'Smaller government' also means that businesses should not be restricted by any laws.
Also that government should be small enough to be pushed around by religion.

Funny. I was trying to think of the last time a Republican candidate for President talked about shrinking government this morning. I remember in 1980 Reagan talked about eliminating the Education Department and getting out of the United Nations. But didn't do anything about it once he was in.

George W. Bush talked about getting people off social security. That would have been some shrinking of government. That idea never caught on so he gave up.

Other than that you have to go back to Warren Harding and Calvin Coolidge in the 1920s.

Democrats are at least honest when they say want bigger govt. Repubs try and hide it.

I forgot about Barry Goldwater. He would've rolled back some programs I'm sure had he been elected. He was probably the last true conservative to be nominated. Reagan talked all nice and pretty but did a good job of giving us more government.

This would be the main reason Repubs are mad today. They finally realized the last few years of Bush what has been going on. Finally.

That's why under Reagan and both Bushes we got more spending on education and healthcare. And exactly how many people were thrown off welfare and WIC and all the other stuff by those guys? Zero. Those guys increased spending for all those programs.

Anyway, what you say is inaccurate. Your average republican doesn't want less spending on any of those things. They think the private sector can do it better than the public. Really all they want is a reallocation of resources so that private citizens can take care of their own business.

And yeah, Bush gave us Sarbanes_Oaxley and the Patriot Act because he doesn't think businesses should obey any laws.

Come back when can say something that is based in fact. You seem to be living in stereotype land.

Well there is Ron Paul.

There is very much a departure between advocates for smaller government and "smaller government politicians"

There was another thread about two years ago maybe... in which a member brought up this very thing. I would suggest you ask yourself, what group, committee or governing body of anything, be it a school board, PTA, county government or the Federal government vote to make itself smaller.

We are all familiar with the idea that power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely. So is it no wonder that those in power don't vote to diminish their own power and influence? In a country that sees things in terms of bigger, better, more, hard to think of government personnel standing around saying, 'man I sure wish there were fewer of us around'.

One of governments biggest failings is removing that which doesn't work from that which does.
