Over the decades, and especially over last four, we've moved so close to fascism, where corporate welfare has taken over people's welfare, that any step back towards the fundamentals instituted by the founding fathers is seen and dubbed as socialism. It is funny and scary at the same time that back then, a Tea Party was organized to oppose corporatism. Now, many (and mostly self defeaters) are tea bagging for the corporations. We've come a long way indeed.

Corporations were subject to very strict charters back then. They were allowed to function as subordinates to the government, controlled and defined exclusively by the legislatures.

One of the primary purposes of the government was to supervise and control corporations, but many around here seem to detest the idea.

Just like the USSR, sounds more like Andrew Jackson.

You said that way better than I could. Thanks. And, yes, at this point, with our economy as unstable as it is, the government needs to have more control to prevent these monolithic corporations from being driven into the ground by greed or going belly-up through no fault of their own, when their demise would cause severe repercussions to the American people and further destabilize our economy. Think Lehman Brothers.

"Seizure of non-bank financial companies"

No, that wasn't an earthquake; it was all the founding fathers rolling over in their graves.

And just like the executive pay, it starts small and gets expanded.

Way to go Barack Chavez.

Call it socialist, fascist, communist, whatever you want but it's not capitalist. Why are there not more people screaming about this than there was about the gubmint wire tapping known terrorists? Must be that class envy hard at work.

Re: Right to Seize.......

This is giving the governement too much power. Much like the Imminent Domain, land grab issue.

If the government wants a firm, failing or not, they can just take it and say it's failing because, "They said so."

Wrong. It is returning power to the government, something that had been taken away from it by corporatists over last 100-150 years.

Wrong. The government has gained more power over it's citizens over the past 100 years via the tax codes.

The more power government has gained, the more regulatory power over the private sector, the less prosporous we have become.

I wouldn't say that's the case, but I can see why you might think that.

Personally, I have more distrust of the government. I'd say to the contrary of your view, they've seized a lot of power from the corporation. There are a lot more rules in place than there wer fifty years ago.
