Events include bobbing for pigs feet, hub cap hurling and the Redneck mud pit belly flop contest.

from latimes.com:

Reporting from Atlanta -- In a cultural war that has pitted Old South against New, defenders of the Confederate legacy have opened a fresh front in their campaign to polish an image tarnished, they say, by people who do not respect Southern values.

With the 150th anniversary of the start of the Civil War coming up in 2011, efforts are underway in statehouses, small towns and counties across the South to push for proclamations or legislation promoting Confederate history.

I had something like 25 ancestors (perhaps more) fight for the Confederacy. They were as wrong as the Germans who fought for the Third Reich.

True, some Jews, and even Native Americans (Chief Stand Watie comes to mind), but this latter group did so because of the misguided thinking that if the South won, they would "Take their black slaves and leave our land." Instead all they accomplished was losing what was "Indian Territory" (today's Oklahoma).

Some blacks did fight for the Rebs; mostly in the last stages of the war. They were promised their freedom if they fought. Most simply deserted.

But the war was all about the ability of the South to treat black people as things, property. That's the simple truth.

You know, if you really look into the Civil War and try to understand the real reasons behind the conflict, you might understand that slavery was really just a sidenote. The South was not fighting just for their right to have slaves. They were fighting for the right of the state to govern itself, as per the Constitution. The state's right to succession.

Slavery was merely the issue used by the North to sway public opinion and is still used to this day as the supposed primary reason for the conflict because the last thing we want to do is give our children enough education to understand the whole story. Nevermind the fact that black Americans were treated no better up north than they were down south. They may not have been slaves, but they were still treated atrociously. Also, let's not forget the hundreds of wealthy northern slave owners. Oh yes, the ones who lived in the north but had large plantations down south. It is common knowledge, yet these facts are always overlooked in favor of attacking the south.

Now we have this country wide ignorance about the Civil War and it's implications, and no one has the guts to really discuss the whole issue. And on top of that you always have these types of smart comments about southern stupidity that perpetuate an image that couldn't be further from the truth. Now we all know that slavery is, was, and always will be a terrible thing. No human being has the right to own or control another human being. But this concept that the south is the same as it was 150 years ago is ridiculous. As is the concept that the war was fought solely to free the slaves.

Sorry, but it was no where near as simple as that. Wonder if you realize some confederate states had already decided to free their slaves before the war began. Nothing the south could have done would have prevented that war because the Federal Government refused to allow those states to leave the union. As I said in my earlier post, slavery was and is only the cover used to justify the war.

If there had been no slavery, there would have been no war. Simple as that.

Some southerners are just as pig-headed racist as their ancestors 100 years ago. Many of them have just gotten more sophisticated about it.

An ancestor of mine (from my father's side) was the founding governor of Tennessee: John Sevier. Today, he's celebrated like some kind of hero. In reality, he was a genocidal maniac, who raped and pillaged his way across Indian territories--in one well-known instance, even going so far as to search out and drag from hiding Indian women and their children and murder them on the spot. Total Nazi nutcase. But oh, the lovely and pride-filled stories you'll hear out of the mouths of his descendants. . . .

Wrong, great program on the PC version of the cause of the war. Believe me, reading is fundamental in finding the truth. TV is regulated by the government. Thus, you see what is considered appropriate by our leaders. Reading is the only way you will ever get the whole story.

You cannot say there would have been no war, because even without slavery there could have been any number of problems arise. Resulting in those states deciding to leave the union. We have had recent news about various states considering succesion. Texas and Oklahoma have been among the states mentioned. And as far as I know, there is no problem with slavery in those states these days.

You can't rewrite history. If there had not been slavery, there would not have been a war. The fact that there were "a number of problems" is irrelevant. What motivated the war was the South confronted with the very real possibility of losing the institution which supported their entire economic foundation: slavery.
