DALLAS - The police officer who pulled out his gun and threatened an NFL player with jail instead of allowing him inside a hospital where his mother-in-law was dying resigned Wednesday.
Officer Robert Powell had been placed on paid leave pending an investigation of the March 18 incident.
“I made this decision in the hope that my resignation will allow the Dallas Police Department, my fellow officers and the citizens of Dallas to better reflect on this experience, learn from the mistakes made, and move forward,” Powell said in a statement issued through his attorneys.
Well there is a first time for everything. This is great news for America. I dont ever remember a case where the pigs did not defend their own despite being dead wrong. I hope that useless waste of human flesh pig donut munching hard guy gets the pulp beat out of him in his next job as a Walmart greeter for $6.55 an hour.
Good riddance to yet another burdon on the tax payers and motorists. Now all we need to do is go back to every ticket that donut connoisseur has given out and have them all crushed because it has now been proven that they are all bogus.
I suspect the media will follow this clown with an attitude everywhere he goes in his despicable life and report to us peasants what and where he goes.

Reason: spelling
I don't get it? If someone is hurt or dying in your car for whatever reason, you get to the hospital as quickly and safely as possible. I imagine I would be pretty distraught and slightly beligerant if I was in that situation and I am extremely laid back and nonconfrontational (almost to a fault). The cop even held the dying person for a few minutes. If someone, ANYONE, in my car is dying, I am going to run redlights (after looking of course), put my hazards on, speed, and not pull over for the cop until I am at the hospital. Of course they can't tell people they can do that but after the fact police officers do have that discretion and as someone else mentioned, happens all the time all over. A huge part of their job is judgement and quick decision making. He won't be able to be an effective police officer for a very long time, if ever.
I think the racist card is pulled too frequently as well, but that doesn't mean it is never true. My first thought when I saw the video is, that never would have happened to me and I am a white female.
All that being said though, I do feel for the police officer. It does seem like a harsh punishment but at the same time, he probably shouldn't be a police officer if he can't make a calm, rational decision in the heat of the moment.
Yeah no problem. You called the cop a racist first...I'll wait until you can back that up.
Are you the former officer Powell? Are you in some type of relationship with him or something? I attacked Powell. You attacked me. If Powell has a problem with what I said, he can challenge me. Or are you his P.R. man or something?

Bingo. As reticent as I am to bring race into this unfortunate situation as well, I can't help but feel that the officer in question would have been a lot more accommodating were this the case.

Yeah, except that it DID happen to a white female. The wife of an NFL player. Detained for 3 hours.
Why cant people frop the whole "racist" cop-out. Use it when it is actually warranted.

Looks like someone has her panties is a wad. Such hate spewing out. You'll never find the man of your dreams with that attitude lady.

That's a felony. There is no discretion for felonies rgeardless of the reason.... always pull over no matter what. If you can prove that someone IN the vehicle is in mortal peril than the cop will either escort or call rescue, but if you just run.... you will be arrested and put in handcuffs, and the person in mortal peril will not be attended to until everyone else is in cuffs and secure

Calm down. Nobody's trying to cop out of anything. It's simply an observation. Whether the cop did what he did with racist intent or not doesn't take away from how wrong he was for doing it. Besides, the wife in question (Maritza Thomas) looks Hispanic to me (the one on the right (http://www.dallasnews.com/sharedcontent/dws/pt/photos/2008/08/080828_NFL_25wittenpeetethomas.jpg - broken link)). But whatever. The situations are completely different, in that one was a grave emergency and the other wasn't. And of course we don't have video of Mrs. Thomas' stop and arrest so we'll never really know what took place.

Not you in particular. Just saying. And I agree he was a complete dick, its just people throw out "racist" far too often.

I appreciate your honesty. Since I am a black male, my wife and I were thinking what would have happened if the NFL player had been white. That thought just automatically went through our minds, even thought my wife and I are far from using the race card in situations like that. The NFL player did break the law by speeding, and that poor cop just didn't think quick enough to understand that player had a legitimate reason for speeding, though his speedking to the hospital didn't make it right.
