Come on liberals...you're disappointing me! Where's all the talk about why we shouldn't have our cross-hairs on North Korea's illegal nuclear facilities?!

When we were learning to get a rocket to go up and keep going up, my parents lived near where the launches were done. They would hear a loud noise and look outside. Sometimes it was just a noise, nothing went anywhere. Sometimes they could see the explosion just off the ground, sometimes something went up and suddenly down. It was no secret. But it was joked about.

Of course after multiple attempts we learned. I suspect that the dictator of NK expects success and is flexing his retoric in expectation. Realistically there will be many failures. Maybe he is using the opportunity to display his wings like a peacock does even if nothing comes of it.

Thing with NK is that its true, nobody wants them. A population who's main preoccupation is having something to eat that day, total repression and no economy, what were allies no longer accomidating them....

China isn't going to rise in their defense since NK is small potatoes in the game they are playing.

As cold as it sounds, who wants to take over a country which will require such a huge committment to feed once your in charge?

I pity the people of NK.

Yes, this was my first thought too. I'll bet there's many a retired rocket scientists in the cocoa beach area raised a glass to the Korean scientists' effort. A 2000 mile "failure" isn't so bad in the rocketry business, even if they failed to make orbit. If someone doesn't think so, well that's OK.

Why shouldn't they have a satellite? Who is this country and who is our president to say they can't have one. Why should we have one (or dozens) and they can't?
Why shouldn't they have nuclear power? We have it. Dozens of other countries have it. Why can't NK?

North Korea isn't interested in having a satellite; this whole incident is predicated on North Korea's desire to test a long-range intercontinental ballistic missile with the capability of carrying a nuclear warhead half-way across the globe. Nor is the country interested in nuclear power for peaceful purposes, at least not primarily, as developments in diplomatic negotiations with the country have clearly shown.

This is a security problem and a problem of human rights; we are not the only ones interested in seeing North Korea not succeed in testing an ICBM or expanding nuclear power! China, Russia, South Korea, Japan... these countries all largely agree with the US' position. North Korea is the last truly totalitarian state in the world; it's population is completely cut off from the outside and famine is widespread.

The humanitarian condition in North Korea is catastrophic; for example, when someone commits a crime, especially a 'political crime' (such as viewing a TV show from South Korea) the entire family is punished, often executed. While the vast majority of the country's population is starving to death, the North Korean government is spending vast sums of money on building and testing these weapons and expanding the military. Anyone with a conscience should be bothered at a moral level...

They know communism will never exist without assistance. At least Kim Jong-il learned it faster than our liberal friends here in America.

Communism is an outdated and inaccurate term for today's world. North Korea is a totalitarian government which practices a rather unique communist-type of ideology known as 'juche' which has had horrible implications for the populace.

Additionally, your ad hominem attacks on liberals are a bit unproductive (perhaps even counterproductive, as such types of insults tend to undermine one's credibility for engaging in intellectually-honest and serious debate) and, like your use of the term 'communism' itself, inaccurate. It would be hard to find a liberal in the US (or really anywhere anymore) who supported 'communism' as you likely understand it. Very liberal Americans, such as myself, tend to support social democracy (or, in extreme cases, democratic socialism) which is the type of government/economic approach taken by most highly developed European countries. Social democracy has led countries like Sweden and Denmark to have higher standards of living, lower income inequality, lower crime rates and almost nonexistent levels of poverty in comparison to the US; it's seemed to work out quite well for them and they certainly don't require the type of assistance to which you refer.

This is a forum for political debate so I'll post where I damn well please; free speech, and all, ya know? An inability or unwillingness to defend your blind assertions suggests either that you know that your position is indefensible, thus requiring that you resort to insults and personal attacks to draw attention away from your assertions, or that you really don't know much about the issues under examination. I, myself, would wager that it's a little bit of both.
