The more things "change", the more they stay the same. In a speach today, Obama used the "WMD" words.

Yep, evil GW used fear and rhetoric to invade Iraq. In his first 100 days, Obama has pledged thousands of new troops for Afghanastan, and now is warning North Korea about its WMD program.

How long before we invade North Korea in search of WMD?

Iraq and North Korea are fundamentally different issues; North Korea actually has nuclear weapons already. It is not illegitimate for the US to actively seek to limit the ability of other states', particularly ones as unstable, totalitarian and oppressive as North Korea, to acquire and expand upon their existing stockpiles of WMDs. This does not mean that we should invade countries every time we believe they are developing such weapons. The Clinton Administration, the Bush Administration and now the Obama Administration have all engaged in negotiations with North Korea to try to prevent the expansion of their WMD program. North Korea poses a threat to South Korea, Japan and even China; virtually all countries have an interest in trying to get North Korea to give up its nuclear arsenal and to stop developing nuclear warheads. What is wrong with us seeking to limit the proliferation of WMDs? Are you pro-WMDs? I'm a liberal who was opposed to the invasion of Iraq, but I'm not someone who believes every state in the world has the right to develop such weapons, particularly when they are as unstable and oppressive as North Korea.

President Obama will not do anything about North Korea-period, except end up giving them food, fuel and the like to get them to say they stopped. You wanted a liberal president you have one, it is not a Liberal's way to stand up to such nations, only cave in to their demands.

What exactly would you propose be done? This is an incredibly complex geopolitical situation in which there are no easy answers; the US, China, Japan, Russia, South Korea... all have been working to prevent the expansion of North Korea's WMD programs for years now with limited success. We are heavily constrained in the options we have; every type of policy response has numerous consequences, some of which are unpredictable. It's all well and good to say we'll take a hard line against the North Koreans, but actually doing that is a whole other matter. The implications are staggering and the US is only one of several state actors involved.

Bush's more hardline approach didn't accomplish anything, either. Indeed, it was during the period in which the US was taking a particularly hardline approach to North Korea that North Korea finished developing, and tested, a nuclear weapon. This led the Bush Administration to engage in the 6-party talks (which remains the status quo) which, at the very least, caused North Korea to backpeddle some. The situation, however, remains tense and dangerous. There are no easy answers.
