I'm SICK of people bringing up polygamy when talking about gay marriage. we're talking about marriage between TWO CONSENTING ADULTS, nothing more, nothing less!
and this is NOT a Christian nation. it's a nation founded on Christian values, but it's not the official religion. this is a melting pot country and there are many people of multiple religions and faiths living here and to call it a Christian nation is ludicrous! this is why religion doesn't/shouldn't trump other people's rights to marriage

Even so, there's nothing wrong with polygamy/polyandry as long as all parties are consenting to the relationship.

Is this not the reason the people of 46 states (previously 50) use to ban gay marriage? If not that, then what?
46 other states don't allow gay marriage because the majority voted to deny rights to a small group of people who don't practice the same religious beliefs - and yet, being gay doesn't appear to violate any local, state, or federal laws. The scary thing is, laws are being changed by the majority specifically to deny rights to certain groups. I guess if you can change the laws to suit you, it's easy to dictate which groups of people can enjoy certain freedoms. Are we going forward or backward here?
Interracial marriage used to be illegal up until the United States Supreme Court decided that it was unconstitutional to deny people the right to marry based on race in 1967. I'm guessing the court will have to step in again at some point and prevent the majority from denying rights (or stripping them away) from a group of people because they do not share the same beliefs as the religious majority - I just can't see how this isn't a civil rights issue just like race was back in the 60's.
I just don't understand how being gay is all that different than adultery and divorce in religion. All three are huge no-nos in the Bible, and yet, adulterers and divorcees are not denied the right to remarry due to their actions being seen as minimalizing to, or detracting from, the concept of marriage. Why is one group alienated and the others accepted? If gay marriage is banned, those two groups should also be denied the right to remarry as well. You can't just pick and choose which religious values to abide by.
The only thing truly absurd is people focusing on issues that do not involve one human harming another.
"Harm" may be defined in many ways.
Expanding the definition of marriage to include any two adult humans introduces the question of why the definition should be limited to two. Or to adults. Or to humans.
There is considerable potential harm for all of us in this malignant evolvement.

If someone is of sound enough mind to consent - there is no harm involved at all.
Are you going to suggest that marriage could be between an animal and a human? Because that animal surely cannot consent. A child cannot consent. A tree cannot consent.
Doesn't matter what 46 states say. The US government does not operate under 26+ states saying yea makes it a federal law. 4 states allow it, and that's end of story and the federal government can do nothing about it.
Obama has vowed to abolish the Defense Of Marriage Act. When this happens, it'll open the floodgates. Same-sex couples will then be able to get married in a state that allows it, and then go back to their home state and demand that their state recognize the marriage, even if their own state doesn't perform same-sex marriages.

your analogies can very well seem justified, but unfortunately America is not the tide turning nation on this issue, which means there are examples in the world to examine where gays have been granted marriage rights.. and it has been this way for almost 2 decades and there is no evidence to support the claim of "harm" and destruction of society...
Typical scare tactics of the right...
When will you people learn that americans are tired of being scared into submission!!! The world is not coming to an end because YOU think it will from one or two or even a handful of issues...
Breathing... bleeding.. feeling.. loving... involves LIVING.. and this life is all about "issues"... they're never going to go away.. its how we handle them.. Justly and with respect for ourselves and others
Its time to stop being idealists and start getting Real up in here...
We've waited to long for this to be told ever again that "you're not good enough"
Enough is enough!!!
