Inspired by the movie "Watchmen" which was set in an alternate 1985 with Nixon still being president, I thought about what it would be like in the year 2001 with Dan Quayle as our president. He had just been reelected in the 2000 elections for a second term, and in 1996 he succeeded George H.W. Bush after his two terms. What do you think our society would have been like then?

Even if Nixon served out his full second term, he would have been out of office in Jan 1977 and prohibited by the Constitution from running again. Where does 1985 come from?

If George HW Bush had won in 1992, then Quayle might have run in 1996, but there is no guarantee he would have won nomination. If he did, he would have turned out to be a one term President. I think the biggest possible effect would have been on Congress. If GHWB won in 1992, then there would not have been a "Hillary-care" plan in 1993 and the "Contract with America" in 1994. The Democrats might have retained control of Congress in 1994, and that might have setup a whole new dynamic for the economy in the 1990s and beyond.

About the same, probably. William Kristol, Dan Quayle's Chief of Staff is considered the "Godfather" of the Neoconservative movement which include Bush the younger, Rumsfeld, Rove and Cheney. He argued that the President was a figurehead or placeholder and should be selected based on demographic appeal while the business of State was conducted privately, behind the scenes by experts such as himself.
