Of the 30% that are raped while serving, it doesn't say by other service members. I wonder if this study included women who were raped by their husbands, friends, or other non-military personnel. I'm not trying to make light of this situation, but I also don't want there to be a misperception here about women serving in the military. They can and are raped here in the states as well, and I think those numbers are included as part of the VA study. I don't think 30% of the women serving in Iraq were raped, but that's must my guess.

We have no business in Iraq as far as I can see. This doesn't mean I don't support our troops - it simply means that I feel that what goes on in Iraq is none of our business and we need to stay out of it. If it's about oil, we should drill for more oil here at home and/or expand use of alternative energy.
I hail from a military family, having also served myself. I'll leave the choice up to them and if they do, they will have no less than 100% of my support, and pride to boot.

I do respect your decision nonetheless.

What about the women who get attacked on their way to the bathroom at night in the middle east?
I know women who kept buckets in their rooms so they didn't have to go outside at night.

Every rape is violent.
I never heard any such thing in my "tent city" quarters in Baghdad, Balad, Kirkuk, Ali, or Bagram. That doesn't mean it doesn't happen, but i'd be slow to rely on the paranoia of a few to exact an accusation on all.

Coolhand, if they have PSAs on AFN, it's a big problem and they're trying to cover their butts.

Yes, there is also spousal rape and other violence against spouses, in particular by people returning from 15-month deployments, some back to back.

There's no one answer. But cutting back on 15 month deployments would be a nice start.

is your truth based on reality, or is it based on the huffington post?

Sexual offenses are in no way, shape, or form acceptable, but since when did it make sense to have 100,000 men and a few women in a confined space together? I don't condone any of the abuse at all, but does it really surprise anyone?

It happens in neighborhoods all across America. Singling out the military is just another liberal wuss-fest.
Soldiers need nooky also.

Rape is not sex. It is violence.

Are you condoning such a violent act against a woman?

If he/she is old enough to enlist, than he/she is old enough to make a decision on his/her own, no matter what dad or mom says. I tend to believe that there is a way to support your children without necessarily agreeing with everything they do. If they want to be patriotic, let them. What's so wrong with that? Just because you suffer from a cowardice attitude doesn't mean they do.
