Ask the Expert: Why America Is Becoming More Progressive

By Ruy Teixeira | April 21, 2009

How have American demographic and geographic trends changed in the past 20 years? Why has the United States become more progressive? What do these trends say about what we should expect in the next 20 years?

Interesting how Liberals are now trying to separate themselves from the demonized term by calling themselves 'progressive'.

Progressive and pro-protest...oh, unless it's against the Statists in Washington such as our benevolent Bernanke and Geithner.

It was never anything to be ashamed of, it's just that the conservative media pushed "liberal" in unflattering terms.

Plus, "progressive" is accurate, as its political opposite, "regressive's" (Republicans) is accurate as well.

If you look back over time at an old political program and you see that it gave rise to progress, then you know it was progressive. Otherwise how can you tell?

If it is nothing to be ashamed of, why hide the label? If anything, Conservatism is the one to be ashamed of, since it is ..well.. Conservative.

No, the opposite is 'Conservative' there is no such thing as a regressive. However, unlike the term Liberal, Progressive is relative. In Europe, for example, progressive is a label tacked onto Conservatives (especially in economic issues).

What the OP points out the obvious - That people are going to vote more Democratic after 8 years of Bush, and that the death of the white working class is a godsend to progressives.

I see. Your idiotic notion of "progressive" is something that we should be ashamed of.

Fat chance. I'm progressive - and a liberal. America exists because of us. Had we left it up to the conservatives, we'd have a queen today.

So, the opposite would be a huge intensive government spending us into poverty, right? That certainly explains 'W'

No, America is not becoming more progressive; but, Democrats are.

Progressive=Socialist=Democrat.
