That's because volcano monitoring is not economic stimulus and pandemic spending is not economic stimulus. Both republicans and democrats are guilty of adding pork, spending measures not related to the original intent of the bill, for pet projects to "bring the money home".

You have a strange impression of how science works.

Of course those are stimulus projects. What a silly thing to say.

Spending money on worthwhile projects in the US - that put people to work and help us stay competitive - is exactly what our stimulus plan should do. What do you think stimulus is?

Well, a pandemic can wreck the economy faster than Bush, Cheney, and Rover ever could. Besides, its money spent here in the US, not in Iraq or Afghanistan.

Are you proud that they prevented the government from being prepared for the swine flu now coming out of Mexico?

He most likely thinks a stimulus is whatever Rush and Bill-O and Sean and Glenn and the rest of the Faux News crew tell him it is.

Excellent post.

You're right. The equipment and labs build themselves. The volcanoes monitor themselves. The vaccines reasearch, develop, create and distribute themselves. Health screens are automated. No engineers, scientists or doctors necessary. No people would be put to work by implementing any of those programs. Furthermore, no Americans would be protected by the services. The economy is not affected by major environmental disasters or pandemic disease spread. You're right. Thank goodness we have the intelligence and foresight of the Republicans.

You have to buy some pretty expensive equipment and hire personnel if you want to monitor a volcano so I'd say it does stimulate economic activity. Are you really claiming that building hospitals (or repairing existing ones), buying equipment for hospitals, purchasing medicines, purchasing vehicles like ambulances, and other such activity doesn't increase economic activity? Do all of these things not have to be built by someone? Or do they get magically created via libertarian fairy dust?

Use your brain just a little.

Wow, some of you are really stretching the truth. First of all, if the Democrats wanted this in the bill it would have still been there and so that means there were democrats who also opposed this spending. Secondly, even if it had been approved, it would not have taken effect prior to the swine flu outbreak. And thirdly, if this and volcano research is so vital then couldn't it have been approved in a separate bill on it's own? Also, isn't there already measures in place for volcano monitoring and pandemic monitoring and studies? There are already government resources dedicated to both of these areas. What Congress needed to do was approve an increase in those agencies' budget.

Actually, I think that's his problem. Maybe he and his friends should shoot for more than "just a little."
