When House Appropriations Committee chairman David Obey, the Wisconsin Democrat who has long championed investment in pandemic preparation, included roughly $900 million for that purpose in this year's emergency stimulus bill, he was ridiculed by conservative operatives and congressional Republicans. <snip><snip>
What does "pandemic preparedness" have to do with economic stimulus? If it was supposed to be an omnibus budget package, it should have been discussed and debated as an omnibus budget package. If it was supposed to be an emergency economic stimulus package, then it should have been stripped of items that had a tenuous (if that) link to stimulating the economy.
I'm sure those that are facing hardships and possibly the deaths of loved ones will be happy to hear that the GOP were so discerning in their definition of economic stimulus.
Collins, Republicans, Killed Off Enhanced Pandemic Preparedness
Quote:
Hey, remember during the negotiations over the stimulus bill, when those prudent Senate Republicans extorted Obama to indulge their budgetary fetishes but still championed preparedness for an influenza pandemic?
I am curious, given the insane cost of healthcare in this country, how quickly $900 million will be spent in hospital/doctor bills that could have been avoided.
After that...not only did she screw over Public Health (which is the greater of the evils), but she also fuc*S over the economy. Good days work for a Republican.
What part of economic stimulus does "pandemic preparedness" fit?
Dukester, here's a homework assignment for you. Find out where the preparedness money would have been spent and how many jobs would have been created. Then come back and tell us your findings.
Surely you can dig up something that refutes any notion that the HANDFUL of companies that deal in influenza medicine will have produced any measurable number of jobs! You can do it Dukey! Don't let that pesky little thing called "economic stimulus" get in the way!

Dukester, I don't believe anyone disagrees with pandemic preparedness, Democrat or Republican. Your Democrats needed Collins' vote to pass the stimulus. If pandemic preparedness was so high on the Democratic stimulus agenda, they would have said "to hell with you Collins." This whole sham was politics as usual. You're falling for the politics of it all Dukey. DailyKos is infecting your brain. There will be pandemic preparedness funds spent. Period.

Yes yes, bodies are piling up like cordwood because of those mean nasty Republicans.
God forbid an economic stimulus bill focus its resources on, like, stimulating the economy.
The Republicans have never been known for their compassion.
