Washington — (AP) - Rep. James Oberstar said Tuesday that he wants Congress to enact a mileage-based tax on cars and trucks to pay for highway programs now rather than wait years to test the idea.

The tax would entail equipping vehicles with GPS technology to determine how many miles a car has been driven and whether on interstate highways or secondary roads. The devices would also calculate the amount of tax owed.

You hated wiretaps. Do you also hate the thought of government tracking your every move?

I guess I won't be able to use my GPS anymore, since I'll be jamming the GPS frequencies should this be passed.

Anyone wanna buy a used Garmin?

Dumb idea.

If they want drivers to pay for the federal highways, turn em into toll roads.

People who use roads more should pay more. A large increase in the gas tax might be a better way to do that though.

Careful. The informant network (aka Stasi civilian workforce) may rat you out in exchange for a continuing stream of food and money.

I call on the good people of MN to vote this tool out, just for the suggestion of this tax.

With the lower gas tax revenues from higher mileage vehicles it will be comingIMO.The highways have to be fixed some way.More likely to be done at inspections really.

We're not far from that! Especially since CO2 is considered "harmful" even though we exhale it.
