I can see where many people have serious mental problems. Hope you are not one of them. You can't seem to put your thoughts together. The original comment does not make anyone jump to making fun of vets for most people.
I'm not sure who shut down the mental hospitals. I see a lot of them still operating in our state. We have a fine vet hospital. I think the ACLU made it impossible to admit any person who won't go voluntarily thus they are on the streets, not taking their meds and not wanting to go any place but under the bridges.
When such a large percentage of homeless are vets I wonder how you compartmentalize homeless vets from non vets. Do you feel better about yourself when you make fun of the unfortunate people on the street?
Oh and to answer your question it was Reagan that put the people on the street to save money.
Some. But others really do have mental illnesses. Some are veterans who suffer from what we now refer to as Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. And some are women and their children who are homeless because they were escaping an abusive husband father. And some are those who were sexually abused at home but had nowhere else to go. Then there those who are homeless, who are not mentally ill, and would be productive otherwise if not for a variety problems exacerbated by the current economic climate.
My hubby and I are going to work at the Lord's Diner tonight so maybe I can talk to some people and find out about their circumstances but for the most part I will be busy feeding them. We have many volunteers from the various churches in town who come each day to help pass out food and drinks. They have a nice place to sit down to eat.
Hey, make sure to take a copy of the fun little story with which you started out this thread. I'm sure they'll get a real chuckle out of it!
I thought the story was pretty funny, regardless of ideological or political persuasion (although my take on the humor is also affected by the fact I'm not homeless.)
There is another pretty funny story trying to be told here, about how we begrudge giving fifty bucks to help a homeless American, but we will give billions to a politically connected defense contractor, but it'll take a better writer than me to tell it.
Our government has always spent money to help people. The only question is what form of this socialism we prefer--individual or corporate.
All the people I saw tonight did not look disabled to me, just down on their luck. I am sure many would welcome the chance to earn an extra 50 in a heartbeat. And just what is wrong with hiring a mentally handicapped person to do a job? Where my hubby works they have a mentally challenged man doing the janitorial work and he does a very fine job. Some people just need the contacts to get a job and don't have them.
I am also sure if any of those people were asked, they would say they do not enjoy going in for a free meal but where are the jobs so they can earn money? They are begging to work. They want to be productive, not take a hand-out.

That is very admirable. I think you should be careful though!
