No, many Republicans are very much opposed to both abortion and gay marriage. They're not merely using the positions to attract voters - they are definitely against both.
I don't know how to vote in the poll because they do use the issues to get votes, but they also do care about the issues. They may or may not do anything about them, but they do care (and YES, they have done things about both issues...they haven't been successful at banning abortions, but they have been successful at imposing stricter requirements on abortions).

Yuppers! They have used issues like abortion for years...to WIN elections. The stupid dolts who vote for them have never noticed that Republicans haven't DONE anything to stop abortions but just keep believing the speeches...fools!
How else do you explain Mitt Romney being pro-choice running for governor of Mass and then pro-life running for president? Not all do this, but some do for sure.
I've noticed that many fundamentalist Christians actually have fiscal views that are closer to Democrats (welfare state, interference in the economy, etc), but they won't vote Democrat based on social issues. Most notably gay rights (of any form, not just marriage or civil unions) and abortion (as if it'll be illegal if a Republican gets elected).

Hazziq, most Catholics actually vote Democrat. Most Protestants do vote Republican. That seems ironic because the Catholic church imposes a much stricter code of conduct than the Protestant churches do.

Yes, but Protestants are far more strict on following the code of conduct.
Political figures use these issues all the time to garner votes. It happens on both the right and the left.
Example: Lots of reports have said that Karl Rove is an atheist, or at least questions the existence of God, yet he was heavily involved in recruiting and organizing Evangelical Christians to vote for George W. Bush.

Christopher Hitchens actually claimed that secretly, Rove doesn't believe. Whether or not this is true, we may never know.
