Just out of curiosity, are they mostly Conservative or Liberal? I know Cary and Asheville have turned to the left, but is it a coincidence?

There is a town called Cary, North Carolina which people jokingly say are the initials to "C"entral "A"rea of "R"elocated "Y"ankee's

You should see Charlotte.

There's probably more people here from OH and NY than NC.

Well - other than Chapel Hill and Durham - a lot of North Carolina is fairly moderate - not really conservative.

A big part of it is due to the increase in NYer's - many from Long Island.

Those who sold their 130 thousand dollar homes for 400 grand and came here buying up 250 thousand dollar homes like there was no tomorrow and brought their politics here with them. They messed up NY and fled here to mess this up because that was unbearable

Take a look at some of the threads I have started in the Buffalo forum. NY has lost its freedoms, taxes are high, getting the "right" to own a pistol is terrible, regulation on everything is ridiculous, our state is run by a bunch hippies who will only be happy when we are all driving bikes around.

I can't stand it here, and I am counting down the days till I graduate from college so I can move to a solid red state (I am leaning towards Tennessee, Kentucky, Oklahoma, or South Carolina; wherever I can find a job).

If you are a Conservative in a deep blue state, I feel for you, if you are in a red state, congrats, you chose well

So you think that the Civil War was about slavery?

You do realize that the US didn't officially end slavery until 1863 - a full TWO YEARS AFTER the Civil War began - don't you?

"If I could save the Union without freeing any slave I would do it, and if I could save it by freeing all the slaves I would do it; and if I could save it by freeing some and leaving others alone I would also do that. What I do about slavery, and the colored race, I do because I believe it helps to save the Union; and what I forbear, I forbear because I do not believe it would help to save the Union." - Abraham Lincoln, 1862

The Civil War was NOT about slavery, and the North did not enter into the war to end slavery contrary to popular opinion.

I'm sure you knew that though.

There were Union States that had slaves and Confederate States that didn't. I can't believe that you're a teacher and you didn't know that.

Yes it is; and it's true. My wife and I moved to Greenville, SC two years ago and there are tons of East coast transplants; just in our development alone there are families from Pittsburgh, NJ, Maine and Philly. Cary, an upscale suburb of Raleigh is called Long Island South.
