Gay marriage could soon become the law of the land across New England -- except in the heavily Roman Catholic state of Rhode Island.
Yet the movement has stalled in Rhode Island, perhaps even lost ground, after a stalemate at the Statehouse, a loss in the state's top court and continued opposition from religious leaders.
Rhode Island was also the last of the original Thirteen Colonies to ratify the Constitution so maybe they want to be the last to pass it just because. Or maybe they just want to think about it really hard...
There doesn't seem to be much of a push from any activists. I think many are waiting for the current governor to leave, then it could pass. Providence has an openly gay mayor, who could end up the next governor as well.
