There was a segment on 20/20 the other night about retirees draining the social security and medicare systems. John Stossel interviewed a bunch of wealthy retirees in Palm Beach Gardens to get their thoughts. He said they are very rich and can afford their own medical care and they don't need social security either. Instead they are bankrupting the systems and robbing it from the younger generations later on. Many of these rich retirees were very smug about it and couldn't care less. Some felt a little bad but one old lady said, "Who says life is fair" in her unmentionable double accent. Aaaarrrgh!! She probably never worked a day in her life. There should be a new law based on income and savings levels for these rich old people. $2,000 per month in social security won't even fuel their $300,000 Bentleys.

Please share your thoughts.

I totally agree with you. I sure wouldn't want someone to tell ME "I don't deserve it" after paying into it all my life.

I don't think anyone in La Posada drives a Bentley. It's nice, but it's not THAT nice.

Nonetheless, people taking free things they don't need IS a problem, but maybe so are rich parents sending their kids to public schools. There is no good option other than to scrap Medicare altogether (bad), or introduce income eligibility, like medicaid, which would probably hurt middle income retirees. Like medicaid. In this country, the rich can afford healthcare privately, the poor have medicaid, and the middle class has to stretch, barter, gamble and pray when it comes to access to healthcare!

Please do not use capitals in your post. This is not a thread to go yelling at people.

I do not believe there are any contributions for Medicare eligibility. Just social security. All seniors aged 65 and older are eligible for Medicare. Many Florida doctors are making a huge living just from seniors on Medicare. They get them coming back for nothing all the time. I know another senior who only worked for maybe three years of her life as a secretary and that was 50 years ago. She is now getting over $500 per month in benefits. Do you think she paid enough in? Do your homework!!

I am not judging them but reporting what was said. By the way, many of them admitted to going to the doctor when they really didn't need to and mainly for social reasons. Do you think this is fair to the rest of us who are paying in? This costs the rest of us who are working. If you do the research they are getting far more in benefits than they ever paid in. We are paying for them. They had many experts and studies done that found ridiculous amounts of waste in the system as well as abuse by the elderly. Why should I pay for some old man's Viagra when there will be no coverage at all for us later on? Why should some rich old person living in a $20 million home get medical care when the poor and underemployed working class paying for them has none at all? The study said there should be limits based on income and savings levels of retirees. The system is in dire straits right now and will be bankrupt for future generations. The program said the problem is with AARP lobbying and the old people are a huge voting block. They will vote out politicians who want to change the system. How is that for judging??

I am not bashing older people but mainly saying the system is broken and needs to be changed so those of us supporting the current generation of retirees who really do not need the benefits will have something left for all the money we are putting in. I too have parents and grandparents and great grandparents. There are many retirees who need the benefits and that is fine. The rich, which many of them are especially here in Florida, do not.

For a rich old lady to get on TV and say to John Stossel, "Who said life is fair?" is a hypocrite. Life is only fair when she is benefiting. She was a grumpy old woman any way so who really cares. It is the principal.

I agree with minniememe & gypsychic, if you pay into it you deserve to collect.

What might happen in the future is the cap of $96k (?) being taken off which will in turn have those that make so much, pay more into the system without increasing the max collected already allowed. That might help to save SS. We're in our mid 50's now and even when we were in our early 30's we didn't think it would be there for us either. We planned and saved to have extra savings so we could have a better life and not just depend on SS.

Social Security, Medicare, and unemployment are totally different things. Employers pay for unemployment fund thru employment taxes. Social Security and Medicare are being paid by current workers. The original workers paid in but not to the extent of what they are drawing. Let's keep this on topic please.

The minute they force welfare lifers to get a job and stop sucking our tax dollars is when I will consider thinking about taking someones money away from them just because they are successful. They did afterall pay into this.

We need to reward successful people and force unsuccessful people to earn a living and stop using our money live on.

It is simply not right to believe you can take money away from them because they are successful, but on the other hand fund handouts to people who wont work.

Just think if we stopped welfare cold the money country would have. Afterall we are now into 4 generations of welfare lifers and it needs to stop so we can put that money into the SS kitty to make sure those who paid into it get their share back.

No one should get anything for free, we all need to work for what we have.

If you don't pay into it or for it you do not get it, period.
