It's not because after carrying Bush/Cheney/Rumsfeld's water for all those years he finally bailed, and kept silent for a long time, it's not because he saw through the "Palin pick" for what it was, a crass appeal to Hilary voters; "hey, she has a vagina too", it's not even because he endorsed Obama. A lot of "loyalist" Republicans did all three, yet they are not being branded as Powell has been.
No, I think the real reason is the innate right wing hatred of all things "elitist". Despite Rush being one of the top paid entertainers in the US and Cheney being a "Washington insider" for about 40 years, they both like to portray themselves as "outsiders", "voices crying in the wilderness", all the usual carp that we hear from the right.
The real reason for demonizing Powell is one of NUMBERS. It turns out that Powell has a higher favorability rating than Cheney and Limbaugh combined.
Republicans rejected Powell because his race was a bigger factor in his decision than his political convictions (because Powell does not agree with Obama on very many issues). Why would any Republican continue to support someone who betrayed them?

This is why the Republican party is lost... scores of Republicans endorsed Obama... even the son of William F. Buckley! But when Powell does it, it's only because he's Black... the constant racism in the Republican party is just too much.

That's simply what Rush told you not the truth..Powell laid out why he voted for Obama with detailed precision..Was it about race when Powell supported Bush?

93% of African Americans voted Obama. And Republicans are the racist ones. Right.

Ouch, that's gotta hurt.

I don't agree with Powell all the time but he is certainly welcome to join the Democratic Party and be a part of the future and not the past.
