Lets just clarify - the guy was not a combat soldier, he was a technician. Most likely all his time was spent in the green zone, and the closest he got to combat was getting a splinter opening the door to the air conditioned base BX.
He was a career soldier, didn't even live in the U.S., and had a history of family violence.
Sad situation, but lets save our sympathy to the soldiers he killed. Lets save our PTSD claims to those actual soldiers who have been in combat and come back to rebuild their lives, not some nut with a screw loose.
Combat battalions are trying to help their soldiers during reset.
They offer adrenaline producing sports like skiing, climbing, white water, etc. and the activities seem to help during the readjustment period.
There's no real data and the soldiers seem to take advantage of it.
Funding to continue the program is in question.

PTSD comes from much more than just combat. Abuse (child, marriage, etc.) is the biggest cause of PTSD.

I'm sure his story, why he has it will surface.
Agreed, I just didn't want to see the story exploited for political or other agendas. You already have CNN having it's talking heads discussing the horrors of combat stress when even his father said it wasn't related to combat, and it's doubtful the guy had a shot fired at him in anger in his life. I don't think it was related to long deployments either. This was a career guy - deployment and tours of duty had been his life for the last 20 years.
I think you are going to find this more like an employer/employee work conflict related "going postal" event, not too different from what occurs here now and then. A guy with some issues under the surface had had his buttons pushed, and those dark issues within him exploded.
