I wonder what percentage of atheists are actually married ... unlike evangelical christians who are pushed to be married ... there are probably more unmarried atheists than unmarried evangelical christians ... which would skew the results, no?

My guess not. Divorce rate (per capita) would be based on # of married couples.

In a room with 100 atheists, say 10 are married and 2 split up then the divorce rate is 20%. If there were 1000 of religion X, 200 were married and 50 split up, divorce rate would be 25%.

Probable causes cited include atheists having more education, marrying later and probably having more money. What is not discussed often that the same survey finds the Jewish divorce rate to be higher than those of others. From http://www.religioustolerance.org/chr_dira.htm
Jews--30, Born-again Christians--27, Other Christians--24, Atheists & Agnostics--21%

Just because forgivenness and salvation is available to anyone who calls upon the name of the Lord does not give Christians the license to do whatever they please. Christians are accountable to God for their actions even more so than non-believers as they are representing God Himself.

Yep, they're like a closeted gay who rages in public about gay people. These people over compensate about everything because they know how deep their failings go. Maybe if they practiced what they preached then the rest of us wouldn't have to constantly hear their hypocrisy.

I was talking to one of my christian friends about this the other day, and we both decided it was because christians marry too young and too soon. The pressure doesn't come from the pulpit so much, but the pews. It's almost expected to be married before 25 in conservative circles. My friend was 26 when he married--pretty late for most christians. I'm twenty eight, have dated but haven't gotten married yet because I don't want to get married to the wrong woman and then have to deal with a divorce. Discernment....imagine that! But many christians get married to the first person they fall in love with sooner after they meet and at a younger age....and we wonder why our divorce rate is so high compared to other groups

Our churches need to be teaching discernment to our young people, if you ask me.

I think religion clouds the mind, so I'm not surprised to hear that Evangelical Christians have the highest divorce rates. They live their lives in a delusional state of mind.

Interestingly, Massachusetts has the lowest divorce rate, and Texas has the highest.

LOL. Interesting that you mention that considering all that's been in the news lately.

A quick search turned up this story.

21% (Atheists) vs 27% (Christians) That's your burden of proof to support the Atheist cause?

LOL If you insist on pushing a Wal-mart approach to understanding divorce rates, have at it. That's like driving 10 miles to pay $1.88 for a $1.99 bag of chips. It takes some hard arguing for that to make sense. I see nothing meaningful in these numbers. Sorry
