I am certainly not a Bush supporter, but to say he is the worst President ever is a little much. And to throw Carter in there is also a little short-sighted and completely ignores the largest crisis this country has ever known, the Civil War.

Unless GW really goes off the deep end, there is no way he will ever surpass Buchanan and Pierce who are allways ranked at the bottom. They sat on their hands while this country dipped into the greatest calamity ever with hundreds of thousands dead - the Civil War.

You could argue that the Civil war was necessary. Stripping Americans of their civil liberties cannot. Running the country into enormous debt cannot. Refusing to take a stance against illegal immigration certainly cannot. Alienating the entire world cannot be justfied, either.

I would argue that a Civil war, right now, might do us some good. Bush is sitting on his hands, refusing to acknowledge the issues that matter. All the while, he's using fearmongering tactics to manipulate the people of this country to support wars that serve only to benefit big business. I consider him to be a traitor, though I know he will never be charged.

Bush is an ignorant hick who is beholden to his interests. He's also a shill for religious extremists, which is completely terrifying. But, he is not as bad as the pre-Civil War presidents.

Bush's actions are disgraceful, but Andrew Jackson also did some terrible things in regards to civil liberties and many people (including some supposed progressives) cite him as a great president.

He has ALREADY gone off the deep end. Started a war with a country by the name of Iraq. A country that was NO threat to us and NO way connected to 9-11. He is BY FAR, the worst president in my lifetime (I'm 55), and quite possibly the worst president in the history of our country. He is Arrogant, Ignorant and Foolish. Not even remotely capable of making wise decisions. I am ashamed of so many of his actions. He has caused heartaches and hardships to millions of people!!!

It is hard to agree with much of what Michael Savage says, but is remark that Bush has done more damage to this country than any enemy ever has, is pretty close to the mark.

Buchanan set the stage for the Civil War, he is the only President that comes close.

Well, there is one positive thing about Bush. He was the darling of religious fundamentalists and look how well that turned out!

Even the Republican Party seems to have pushed the evangelicals overboard. Look at the current crop of Republican candidates.

A pro-gay marriage, pro-choice guy from NYC who has been married three times. Hell, he even supports public funding of abortions! I don't think even Hillary supports that.

Then we have a senator, who despite his rather pathetic attempt to try and kiss up to fundamentalists recently, is certainly not a fan of the religious right (remember McCain's speech in 2000 about Pat Robertson?)

Finally, we have a former governor of Massachusetts (that should be enough to make fundamentalists cringe) who stated that he would be a bigger supporter of gay rights than Ted Kennedy!

The shameful thing is, the other choices promoted by the political class were Al Gore and John Kerry, both of whom ran campaigns of ineptitude that clearly indicate either of them were Bush's equal.

We had nowhere to go!

I've heard plenty of emotion, yet little facts. I've read misperceptions, distortions of facts, and outright inaccurate statements. In this thread, I've read that Bush lied to get us into Iraq, without any specific examples given. Besides, we've been there and addressed that. I've read that Clinton left Bush an economy on the upswing, yet, in fact, when Clinton left we were in a recession which started in the 3rd qtr. of 2000, and that everything Bush has done has been a total failure, yet, because of the Bush taxcuts, the country is doing extremely well economically (See the list of accomplishments thread). I've read that Carter made the best of what he had, yet he raised taxes and government power which resulted in double-digit inflation, double-digit unemployment, and double-digit interest rates. He gave away the Panama Canal and weakened the U.S. military.

I've read that Bush is to blame for the inaction of state and local authorities during Hurricane Katrina, though federal help/relief is not permitted unless requested by the governor. I've read that he should be impeached, yet no one can provide a particular "high crime or misdemeanor" which he can be charged with. I've read he has committed "genocide" on the middle class, yet he has raised their standard of living by cutting their tax rates and the rate of captial gains.

Come on people. Provide some facts for your claims instead of emotional rhetoric.

Simple statistic - Lincoln was responsible for the war deaths of more americans then all other presidents combined and the only president to preside over a civil war. That was much more disgraceful a time in american history then Iraq. "The federal union...it has to be preserved..."
For what?? back then. The articules of sucession were probably legal, the civil war was not.
