Senate Democrats decided Tuesday to pull $80 million from the $91 billion war spending request -- money President Obama had requested to close the Guantanamo Bay detention facility by Jan. 22, 2010.

Democratic leaders informed the White House in the morning , that they would withhold funds for closing Guantano until the administration presents a detailed plan for its closure, something the president has said must happen by Jan. 22, 2010.

Senate Appropriations Committee Chairman Daniel Inouye, D-Hawaii, said he will present an amendment this week that will "prohibit all funds in the supplemental and all future funds" for the closure of Gitmo until the White House presents the plan.

Should Obama have put a little more thought into this before acting?

What say you?

Thank God we still have a few Democrats that can think beyond the change.

I personally wish that he would have put some more thought into this before acting on the pretense that he MUST do something to counter the evil Bush empire immediately after he was elected. Obama apparently bought into his own narcissism by thinking he had a mandate to do whatever he wanted and Congress would follow.

I think he's made himself look pretty bad with his knee-jerk reaction in this situation.

Along with Iraq, "Killing kids in Afghanistan", Calling out the old admin on torture and giving Nancy the brown shirt go ahead right before then decided it wasn't a good idea, Talking with Iran and at the same time saying their possession of nuclear weapons was one of the most dangerous problems around right before he said we will give them time and see what happens, Deficit spending...etc...etc...etc... more to come.

At least with all of this embarrassment, Democrats will be distracted with spin control and thus halted from causing more damage to the economy, at least temporarily

But Jon he promised to close Gitmo during the campaign and he can't deliver on many of his promises so he had to try this one because it is too near the time he promised to close the place down. We should feel sorry for him but I don't think either of us does, do we?

The date isn't unreasonable - the halfway point of his admin. Im sure they had the basic logistics sketched out and agreed upon before choosing two years (instead of six months, or four years) as the deadline. If they cant meet it, so they'll extend it.

Meanwhile, the Republicans are grandstanding just to be sheep-stirring. Inhofe of OK was first to start braying I believe.

I think "decided to pull" funds is misleading - Im sure the language concerning its appropriation covers dates and contingencies in detail.

Have a plan before "spending" money - GASP, surely not.
