Sorry, but the lawmakers didn't reject the gay-marriage bill. The House rejected an amendment to the bill, without which amendment the governor has vowed to veto. So it's only the governor who is set to reject gay marriage by his veto.
I find it hilarious that the religious right wackos are reduced to these parlimentary and cowardly tactics to kill the bill. They're claiming to be afraid that they'll be convicted of something if they don't carry out gay marriages, even though no law like that is on any books.
I wonder if any bigots tried the same tactics back in the 60s. Does anyone know if any cowards fought against civil rights for blacks based on a similar chicken-**** argument?

Sen. Byrd (D) filibustered the 1964 civil rights act for a solid 14 hours and 13 minutes all by himself. Wow, what a hateful windbag he must have been back then. I don't even like to do things I enjoy for 14 hours. A number of other Democrats joined in the filibuster until Republicans helped to put an end to it and got the bill to Johnson.

My logic is that would anger blacks because of the white-only restaurants, white-only restrooms, being forced to sit at the back of the bus, poll taxes, segregated schools, etc. Gay people are not subject to this sort of discrimination and, thus, this comparison is flawed.
I do, however, believe that sexual orientation and race are (somewhat) similar in that a person cannot choose either.
I'm not buying that. Some people have a foot fetish and nothing else spins their wheels. Other people like to be tied up and have someone beat the snot out of them. That's what makes their world go round. Homosexuality is a sexual preference for one's own gender. It's a sad day in America when the institution of marriage is altered to accommodate someone's freaky perversion like gay anal intercourse.
If gays could have been identified solely by their appearance, you can be darn sure that they would have been banned in all of the ways you mentioned. Just because sexual orientation isn't immediately visible doesn't mean that there's not discrimination.
Take a poll of Americans and ask them which bothers them more: The fact that blacks exist in this country or the fact that gays exist. I have a strong feeling that more people approve of blacks in this country than gays. (And don't forget - not all blacks are heterosexual.)
Not true. I live in the redneck quarter of SE Michigan. People would definitely prefer a gay guy move in next door over a black guy. Probably has something to do with property values. Besides, gays make more money than heterosexuals. So where's the discrimination? Can't reengineer the institution of Holy Matrimony to suit your needs?
