I ask you again.. have you even BEEN to NYC.. because I've LIVED in NY.. and I know what it's about, what it's appeal is and no matter what NYC will ALWAYS be WHAT it is and is no immediate danger of disintergration.

this nation is going through a tough economic time all around. The rich want to whine about it, go right ahead. They want to move.. go right ahead. it's all BS.

NYC has the BEST chance of weathering the storm BECAUSE it is NYC. If you don't understand that.. you dont understand what NYC is about or it's appeal not only within this country but the rest of the world.
The rich sure fled in the 1970's it will happen again because of the insane tax rates and with the permanent change in the financial service industry the tax revenues for NYC are sure to fall. This will lead to dirtier streets, increase in crime and flight out of the city. For those who believe it will never happen don't have to look too far back in history. Do you remember John Lindsey and Abe Beam?

Well, your arguments are simplistic, if nothing else. As has already been pointed out, people (even rich people) are not driven from place to place about the country by relative tax rates. If they were that dumb, they would not be rich. Except perhaps through inheritance of much more money than common sense. You are attempting to pump life into just another silly version of "If Bush wins, I'm moving to Canada!" or "If Obama wins, I'm moving to Australia!" It's all just hot air once you get down to brass tacks...
New York has 2 options
1) Cut spending
2) Increase taxes

Since increasing taxes dont seem to bring in additional revenue, then that leaves only cutting of spending

The states with the highest population densities also happen to be the states with the highest state & local tax rates. The also are the states with the highest per capita GDP. Retired people might move to states because of low taxes, but the rest of us don't.

Sad.
Oh brother.

Envy? Yeah, right.

Sorry oz, but I don't aspire to be a pompous ass. I couldn't care less about his money. Enormous wealth is the domain of right-wing wannabes, not the majority of Americans.

What are we talking here? Five million dollars from a billionaire? And you call that punishment? Funny. Very, very funny. What's sad is you probably believe your words.

Not only can the super-rich afford to pay more, but in doing so they experience nary a decline in their living standards. Not a bit. None. Nada. Zip. And you call that punishment? Furthermore, what do you think allows them to attain such wealth? What protects their wealth once it is acquired? Got a clue? It's big bad government that does these things.

Giving back to the system that provided opportunity and protected its fruits is not punishment. It's called responsibility. Aren't you right-wingers big on responsibility?

I don't wonder at all. It's the cheap labor they're after.

Golisano, who ran for governor twice, said he will have to pay $13,800 a day in taxes if he stays in New York, roughly $5 million a year.

Golisano leaving New York to escape income taxes : City & Region : The Buffalo News (http://www.buffalonews.com/cityregion/story/672153.html - broken link)

The billionaire earlier this year told The Buffalo News that the only thing keeping him in New York was his family. “The only reason I’m staying in this state is I have family here. Economically, it just doesn’t make sense,” he said in February.

But since then, Gov. David A. Paterson and lawmakers approved a state budget that will raise $4 billion in new income taxes this year on wealthier residents. In Golisano’s case —and anyone else making more than $500,000 this year — he is seeing his state tax rate go from 6.85 percent to 8.97 percent.
Sorry, but what an idiot!

Move your family to China, right?! ($$$$)

Enjoy lucrative tax breaks and constitutional laws on corporate personhoods and military protection in some other country...

This and other posts seem to be promoting the idea that if we don't buckle under and do what the wealthy demand of us, we will be punished.

I find such an attitude to be completely anti-American and destructive to a free society. You remind me of 18th century Loyalists, only your loyalty is to the power of money rather than the power of the Crown.

Until you can show that the number of people who leave will offset the revenue from those who stay, claiming no increase in revenue is unsupported.
