what's this racist going to do? there is no such thing as a racial law. who cares. there aren't hispanic laws, or white laws. let the hispanics rejoice. it's business as usual for those of us who dwell in reality.

Can you imagine what you would be saying if a white man made the statement Sotomayor did?
Oh, there's room for a Latina racist on the court. That's a profoudly under-represented group.
After all, the Court has had its share of male, Anglo racists.
It's balkan payback time. More and more, that's what America is all about.
Personally, I just wish Sotomayor looked a little less like Roseanne Barr.

If you think that it is, you need to go out and visit my neighborhood which has immigrants from all over the world living together peacefully. You can't get more American than that.
Either she is a racist or she is a poor public speaker.
Nonetheless Gingrich is correct about one thing - new racism and old racism are both bad and nothing to gloss over. Whether Sotomayor is a racist, well I don't know and likely noone else on this forum can 'know' either. We can hope for the best and in the meantime look at some of her past rulings to give us a clue as to the way her mind works.
Oh, and lets not pretend that democrats haven't raked over the coals every republican nominee for the supreme court as well --- it is how the partisan game is played, and apparently selective amnesia plays a part in it as well.
You should go to the NYT and read the entire speech before passing judgment on her racism or speaking abilities.

And openly addressing the fact that ALL of us are humans, that we ALL make judgments and form opinions based on our personal backgrounds and experiences is not the statement of a racist. It's the statement of someone who is keenly aware of the differences in perspectives that we all have. It's the statement of someone who is brave enough to willingly bring those differences into the discussion, rather than pretend that any of the judges serving in our courts can claim they have zero biases, that every decision is based purely on the merits of the legal arguments presented. We can point to the blindfold placed over justice's eyes, but an honest jurist would admit that that blindfold is not nearly as opaque as we would like to think, and that we might as well depict her as holding her hands over her eyes with the fingers splayed.

To the argument ... that a majority may not deprive a minority of its constitutional right, the answer must be made that while this is sound in theory, in the long run it is the majority who will determine what the constitutional rights of the minority are."

Let's face it, they're going to lie, lie, lie about her just like they would lie, lie, lie about anyone else who was nominated. Obama could have nominated Jesus himself and the Republicans would bad mouth him saying he hangs around with prostitutes, assaults money changers, and has a huge ego (thinks he's the son of god). There is literally no candidate those hacks wouldn't attack & slander from the get go.
So true! They are so afraid of the diversity in the courts and in government because it going to render their ilk obsolete and inconsequential. They are dinosaurs and will fall by the wayside.
