A year ago it was a must and a key issue for the Dem candidates.

There seems to be some "backing off" going on now so I thought maybe someone here can remind me why that was so important and how borrowing tens of millions of dollars and changing the geographic coordinates will solve it.

I will tell you why- because we have a bunch of do nothing lying liberals in office and none of their sheep want to open their eyes. Just look at the Obama worshippers on this forum and you realize the people that voted for him are living a big lie.

The torture center at GITMO needs to be closed because it cannot provide useful information and brings shame on all of us. Not closing that place is one of the problems I am having with this administration.

I voted for President Obama and I do not worship him, or anything else, I am not living any kind of lie and I am not, and never have been a sheeple.

I suggest you go beyond the propoganda you are listening to and take a look around instead of being a parrot for the zelots.

I, for one, don't think it should be closed, we still need a place to bring those we detain in the war on terror. That said, I think it is past time that we place those we have there on trial in a military or criminal court, and if they are convicted they should be sentenced based on the conviction and if they are found to be not guilty sent back to wherever they came from.

There's no backing off. The date for being 100% transferred is Jan 22 2010 I think - the 25% point of Obama's presidency. Not sure when the date was set but that's the date.

From what?

Also it's still a big issue and a lot of people on the left are going to be pissed if it's not closed.

Well, let's be fair.

Obama made it a major issue during his campaign. Upon taking office, he instructed the AG to close it- by a certain date. OK.

The problem is, if Gitmo is so wrong, so egregious, such a travesty of justice, why did Obama not have an alternative detailed and ready to go immedietly? If its wrong, then right it. Now.

Perhaps because this is a very complex issue- the proverbial gray area. These are not soldiers in uniform/POWs. Nor are they common criminals.

Bush could never bring himself to forge a definitive solution to it. Understood. And now Obama himself requires a year to do so. That tells us that there is no perfect solution and Obama's may be no better than what we have now.

The have to line up places in the US and other countries to put them all, plus appropriate money for it.

The farthest-right brayers in Congress have been braying about an appropriation of $80M for it in recent days. "Appropriating money without a plan!"

Obviously you have to do both. They know this, but they're keeping their constituencies in line, down in the pasture
