A push to legalize Internet gambling

Reporting from Washington -- The online gambling industry is waging a campaign in Congress to legalize Internet betting, arguing that it is here to stay and can be regulated and taxed. But opponents are raising moral objections.

Rep. Barney Frank (D-Mass.), head of the House Financial Services Committee, is leading the fight for gamblers. A previous effort by Frank failed to get out of committee, but the combination of grass-roots and corporate support -- as well as the weakening of the Republican Party -- might improve the odds, advocates said.

"The poker players and other online gamblers have gotten organized," Frank said, adding that he supported the legislation as a matter of personal freedom.

I guess from the looks of this story that I have another reason not to like Mr. Frank. You can tell that I voted no, can't you?

Alfonse D'Amato is with the Poker Players Alliance like myself and the reason the government blocked it is because they want to tax the winnings. If you were unaware George W put the stop to the internet poker craze and any bank that funded poker sites would be handled strictly. You cannot use credit cards and fund online gambling sites if you are a U.S citizen. This is why the numbers for the World Series of Poker for the last few years have been lower then the past.If it wasn't a greed issue it would still be legal.

Gambling should be legal everywhere, not just internet. If someone is going to "gamble" their life away, they should be able to do it in the open, not sitting behind a computer screen..

Those internet gambling sites are mostly scams (tons of large ones have been caught cheating players out of big money)

Keep it illegal. I would guess that internet gambling will become a pandemic problem. Before internet pornography, not too many used. Now the stats say that about 80% do. The same will happen with gambling.

Barney Fragnk claims to be some economic guru, and a champion of the poor, but he is not. What kind of moron would actually want gambling to go UP during a recession. An idiotic guy, that's who!

But why do you care if people look at porn or not? Why do you care if people gamble?

I suppose there could be some connection to violence with both, but unless it can be proven to me that the connection is extremely clear, these victimless acts should be legal.

If it's a scam, they can be prosecuted for fraud.

Wrong. Internet gambling was legal until a couple of years ago when the Republican Congress decided to make it illegal for moral reasons. If it was going to be a "pandemic problem", it would have happened when it was legal.
