Hmmm...I looked them up in the Federal Register and they do receive "funding awards." I wonder why then they would say they dont receive federal grants. I mean, why lie either way?
Good question. As you mentioned, their website does indeed say they don't apply for federal money. It makes me wonder if the lie is actually in the semantics. Maybe they don't "apply" for the money, but maybe they do receive the money. Then that begs the question of why are they just handed money, if that's the case?
If anything, this should cast incredible skepticism on this group by everyone, liberals and conservatives alike.

This is complete bull. ACORN registers voters, among other community services. The right has tried to turn them into a bogeyman. You all should be ashamed for that.
Do they turn in the ones that would vote for a republican or just throw them away?

Or none of us knows the facts; they operated this way forever with and without the government, admin after admin, and no one ever decided to pick at them beyond the usual until a candidate for president actually wanted the people ACORN deals with to register to vote.
The United Way and the Red Cross had their share of financial scandals as well, just saying.
They do "'apply'" for the money because they're listed as grant recipients. They're "just handed money" along with the other nonprofit housing assistance (and etc. community service) nonprofits because like the others they apply for and receive grants, ya think? (So all successful grant applicants are "just handed money"?)
I think ACORN apologists have a short term memory with regards to existing employees (not ex-employees with an axe to grind) blowing the whistle and getting death threats for their trouble.
