" My dear colleagues : With sincere regret, I have been asked to announce that for many of you, this will be your last evacuation drill with us. Due to the on-going recession and bad business climate, the company is laying off almost 50% of its staff. So when this announcement finishes, I ask all of you to move back into the building. And if your swipe-card does not work, then it means that you have been laid off, in which case you will not be allowed inside, and all your personal belongings will be couriered to you by tomorrow.

Wow. If I ever left academia to return to the workplace, that's one place I'd scratch off from the list to work at.

In the 90's my room mates aunt worked for one of the aircraft companies in data entree. Late in the afternoon (after the days work was almost done) the manager came in and ask everyone to stand against one wall. He proceeded to call off names to move to the opposite wall. After they were done those called were told they were to go home.

The ones not called were informed that they had been laid off. They were to collect their things and as they left their severance check and notice would be handed to them.

You can imagine what this did to moral for everone else. What is it about aircraft companies anyway?
