I think they should ALL be allowed to advertise, as hard as they want to. Show people drinking and driving, smoking and playing tennis, shoveling antidepressants down their own and their families' throats.
That's free market capitalism. It would be great for the stock market and Id make money from it.
Im not entirely sarcastic about this: after a couple of years consumers would wise up about advertising and consumerism that much faster if this sort of stuff were absolutely blatant; they'd become disgusted with themselves for having been so numb and trusting and manipulated for so long -- by business, by the "news" media, by entertainment and pop culture trends -- they'd turn off their TVs and wake TF up.
And that's what I want.
I agree! But it will not happen.

((Personally, I love to watch TV without commercials. THANK YOU DVR!!))
I agree with this as well! If the drug companies spent less money in ad work, they could reduce the product cost, thus allowing it to be reached by more of the consumers that might need it.
This is a two part question. I cannot understand why we allow alcohol(drug) commercials on television...this glamorizes alcohol; while cigarette commercials are not allowed. Also the constant bombardment of new and better drugs on the market almost amounts to peddling. Shouldn't ones doctor be updating patients on new drug regimens etc.?I think these commercials encourage SOME people to abuse and "clog" our medical system. Your thoughts???
By alcohol you mean beer? The hard booze commercials are very few and they're on the "cable" channels.
#1. Booze Isn't bad, booze abuse is bad. To say that because something is seen on t.v. makes it something that children and teens would be seduced by means that all programming on t.v. needs to be sanitized because their minds are easily suggestible and may fall prey to suggestion.
#2. Cigarette companies don't need to be on t.v. anymore - ciggs are unhealthy if you smoke a little or a lot.
#3. Pharma companies advert drugs all day long on t.v. and that's about branding and also it's to make the consumer aware of drugs and ask for them "by name" from their doctor. If you don't need "Caduet" your doctor is surely not going to prescribe it because you thought the commercial was slick and sexy.
That seems to be their strategy. I mean they name so many symptoms that pretty much everyone has, your bound to ask your doc about them.
What also gets me is in the anti-depressant one some of the side effects are thoughts of suicide. I mean really??? Aren't the pills supposed to stop you from having those kind of thoughts.
It brings out the hypochondriac in all of us...lol...

I do theoritically agree with some of your logic; but consumers have already been bombarded with these silly/insidious commercials for years. They still have not caught on...remember that old saying.."There's a sucker born every day". LOL....

I do feel that beer/booze is far more dangerous than cigarettes. If you factor in drunk driving fatalities and the "grief" from alcohol related crime and abuse; it's at least as bad as cigarettes.
I actually loathe car commercials...most boring ads ever made, except for the VW ones that were out a few years ago, those were fun. I also want to tear my hair out when the FreeCreditReport.com commercials come on, that song just jangles my nerves. I don't really care about the drug commercials, actually sometimes it makes me want to try that drug.

I agree. Only beer and wine with an alcohol content of 6% or less should be allowed on free over the air TV. Cable TV is another matter because that is a more an unregulated enterprise because it does not use public airwaves to reach an audience.
While we are at it ALL drug ads for drugs that require a prescription from a doctor should be banned too. They are unnecessary and add huge cost to the drugs and to healthcare. Most countries already ban such ads.
I think a lot of doctors are subject to pressures from the pharmaceutical industry. I see so many drug sponsored items around my doctor's office, it's crazy. A pen from this drug, a hand sanitizer from another, tissue boxes...etc.
I don't have a problem with the commercials because a lot of times they don't even relate to me and I figure there has to be a similar drug out there that is genetic.
Even if they stopped advertising, I think many doctors will prescribe the big name brand drugs because of all the drug reps that come in and out their office trying to convince them that THEIR drug is THE drug to prescribe.
I'm sick to hell with all those boner commercials, constantly. The kids keep asking, what is that viagra, Daddy? The wife looks at me funny. Scrap the crap!
