Hmmm, The way these crooked, greedy, bail out money grabbing corportations have operated in the past and present....I'd say somethings should go that way.
Honestly I'd let most of these corporations sink. GM, Chrysler, Ford, Lehman Bros....Let new ones with greater visions and better business practices emerge, or smaller competitive corporations start up after the big ones fail. That's what I was hoping for, but the gov't bailed them out. (please no Obama rants, GW did it as well )
Maybe we could have the Brits and French run our healthcare system for us. (technically it wouldn't be socialized anymore since it's a different gov't running it. Outsourced gov'ts so to speak)...
To clear the air, what irks me is how douche bag conservatives try to scare people away with the whole "socialism" nonsense. If they could see past their old, fat bellied, biggoted, archaic ways, they'd see that this country is still very much a capitalistic society. Right now, gov't is intervening/helping these failures (called corporations) so capitalism does not fail in the long run. (If they could only get that through their bald, freckled heads )
But of course, let the Glen Becks and Hannities of City-Data spew nonsense...It's only a matter of time before someone comes here spewing nonsense.
To answer your question:
What is already socialized so to speak is already good imho:
I don't trust most corporation. Most if not all, just care about their bottom line..PROFIT (at any expense). We know what happens when you're a slave of the mighty dollar (you lose sight, and you cut corners at all costs)
To answer your question:
Schools, Police, Firefighters and Social services etc. Things are not the worse, but let's be real, plenty of things in this country could use an overhaul. We're lying to ourselves if we think we can let things stay the way they are. The reason why there is a crisis now, is because we did nothing for too long.
I also don't mind competition from the government for health care. If it gives people an alternative, that's a good thing. If it will force these greedy, spineless insurance companies and hospitals to lower their fees, that means something good is being done.
I'm all for prosperity, working hard and earning yours, but when it's at the expense of others, I say it has to stop.
I'm all for alternatives and fresh ideas. Doing nothing is what put us here...
(Now I'm waiting for the old conservative creeps to start with their hate speeches..)..Let the James Von Brunns of City-Data speak!!

So to save capitalism, you must replace it with socialism? A major part of a capitalistic society is to let the companies that are going to fail, FAIL. You learn far more from your mistakes than you do if someone keeps you from falling.

That last line is a nice platitude, but it certainly doesn't consider the ramifications on the population if everything is allowed to fail to learn some lesson. Besides, the OP asked what would be acceptable if socialized; that is a far cry from changing from capitalism to socialism. You made that leap yourself...and it's quite a leap.

Lets see the government takeover of private companies. The government choosing who gets to lead such private companies. That is not Socalism?
Let them fail, learn, and pull themselves back up with the knowlege of why they failed the first time, so they do not make the same mistakes.
They failed because the US has a surfeit of greedy and unscrupulous people with MBAs running the government as if it were a business, and businesses as if they were personal expense accounts. They were assisted by legislators whose bottom line is the top dollar...for themselves and their cronies. And the entire populace should pay for their mistakes? In a pig's eye. Put them in prison and let them learn from their mistakes, but keep
the country and its workers afloat...they weren't running the Ponzi schemes and unethical banking practices. And no...nationalizing several
institutions does not equate with a government that espouses Socialism.
