It is funny, people are missing the part where Iranians are fighting and handling themselves pretty damn well. They're not being herded into camps, the administration doesn't even know how to handle the protesters at this point.
How do you know? What little that is coming out is very bad. Beatings, murders, arrests, a complete shutdown of communications - why do you think they are doing that?

So that when they really start cracking heads and bloodletting , no one on the outside will know.

Ahmadinejad: No. We say that the people of Palestine should have rights
and when the people of Palestine exercise this right, this will happen.
Where is the Soviet Union? The Soviet Union has been wiped off the map.
What happened to the Soviet Union? The decision of the people, the vote of
the people. When the people of the Soviet Union, the Russian people, were
allowed to decide to take charge of their destiny, the Soviet Union
disappeared.

The Zionist regime is an artificial regime, a fictitious regime. You
brought people from different parts of the world and you have built this
state. No, that cannot last, it is not sustainable. If they do not listen
to our solution, this will happen one day.

the point is, when these morons opened their mouths they gave the hard liners exactly the fuel they were looking for to write the opposition off as pawns of Western governments.

Iranians are rightfully wary of foreign influence in their nation, seeing as they've suffered for it more than once. It may seem silly to us, but then again that's exactly why we shouldn't be so quick to jump into the fray. If this upheaval isn't viewed as a grass roots Iranian effort, it will lose all legitimacy. Will the people who believed in the cause before go back on it? No. But the large amounts who were on the fence or could have been swayed will now have all the more reason to doubt their good intentions.

This is probably the biggest issue with US foreign policy as a whole. We jump into things too quickly without being invited or even understanding the historical context behind it.

it definitely can hurt, for reasons that have already been elucidated. Our verbal condemnations have never changed the Iranian government's behaviour before. At best, they will have no effect. At worst, they will undermine the cause of the opposition.

There is nothing wrong with saying we back the people. We certainly aren't going to back the present regime. I see where it's sticky as you say. Hell let Biden say it...

and were the preelection polls rigged? As I indicated.. Ahmadinejad had huge breadth of support. The only two groups that favoured Moussavi were uni students and the ultra-wealthy. You entirely discount the grassroots support Ahmadinejad had.

You weren't there to count the votes you don't know, but it doesn't take a genius to figure out that Ahmadinejad had his support.

With this type of mentality the whole world would be under dictatorship.

What would you have advised the civil rights demonstrators about 50 years ago?
